Hi all. I am a new member trying to get the hang of posting. Have been enjoying the forums for a while and feel it is time to be part of it.
Actually I am after some information on the tracks around Rudall River. I was following a thread by Cruisen Tom starting 15/1/08 but can't get it up again (Inexperience) A small group of us are going there in June, (along with everyone else it seems) entering from the north (through the boom gate?) and spending around 4 days there. We hope to leave by the western track via Hanging Rock and Christie Crossing. Can someone help with a few questions? One vehicle will be pulling an off road camper trailer and wants to know if the tracks are OK for him. We are aware of the sandy crossings towards Hanging Rock but is there anything else that may cause him worry?
After we reach Christie Crossing we want to head due south along the Oakover to reach the Talawana Track. There seem to be three track options, the most westerly passing through Balfour Downs itself. Has anyone any info. on these tracks, and if we have to take the most westerly track, do we need to inform Balfour Downs?
And if there is anyone else in the area in June (3rd to 7th) and would like to contact us by HF or phone (we have an Iridium by the way and it has never let us down, but we have put us down for a Thuraya) we would like to hear from them.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Brian,

I've done a fair bit thru Rudall over the past two years.Check the "Places" link above for Tchuckardine Pool and Hanging rock as I posted some waypoints and distances for the track out to Meeting gorge and Tchuck pool. The tracks are very indistinct in places, particularly out past Bocrabee Hills. Very overgrown. I'll be back there again this year but haven't set a firm date as yet, hopefully end of June, early July. Make sure you leave a note in the jar at Tchuck pool.

Cheers

Mick

Thanks Mick. I had picked up on some of your trek notes in another post but the places link fills it out. We will certainly look for the note jar at Tchukardine Pool. You had mentioned some GPS readings for the track west to Christie in another post, are they still available?
By the way, re the Canning, what is the story of the handcart. Was that the 1973 attempt to walk the Canning?
All the best

Yeah no worries Brian. I've been meaning to put a bit of a trek note together. Flat out at work at the moment but I'll try and get something done in a week or so and MM you. Fantastic place. I hope to spend a week or more there this year.

I'll get back to you (but don't hesitate to remind me either).

Cheers. Mick

P.S. There's a few photo's on my rig page that were taken in July last year that will give you a very good indication of the country you'll be travelling and what the track (or lack of it) looks like. They are taken on the track west of Tchuk pool heading to Christies Crossing.

Thanks Mick. It must be some awesome vehicle you drive. Alarm system for what? Loved the photos. Can I get your approval to send the one of you on the roof to other trip members? It will give them a better idea of the track conditions in some places. I have been trying to get them to take a 5L garden spray in case of spinifex fire, but meeting resistance on space grounds. I should post a photo of our burnt out 2A Landrover lost in the Tanami Desert to spinifex. Perhaps that has made me over cautious, but recent rain could start spinifex seeding. What do you think?

Regards.

Beal ,

Rudall to Christie Crossing.

I went through three years ago with Trak Shak camper . I sank into the soft sand on one of the river bed crossings , but I was easily snatched out .

Between Hanging Rock and Christie Crossing , we lost the track on a number of occasions , but used a GPS to eventually hook up with it again . Tyre staking can be a problem if you are not very careful , so take a couple of spares and a good patch kit .

I have never been South of Christie Crossing , so I cannot help you there .

I will be at Christie Crossing mid June .

Cheers ,

Willie .

Thanks Willie. We should be well prepared for tyre problems, and the fact that you took a trailer through to Christie Crossing is encouraging. The trailer has high clearance and fitted with "military type" (whatever that is) suspension and should be adequate. I followed a far less prepared trailer down the Cooper to Lake Eyre and was amazed how far it got before having to be snatched out.
All the best.

Gee, sounds like I'm going to be by myself when I'm planning to be there mid-July. I'll come in from Telfer, have a look at Desert Queen Baths and exit out to the west.

I bags 2nd tree on the left from the mouth of the gorge at DQB camp area Alan. I reckon we may have to start the "Rudall Apreciation Party". A RAP Group. If people keep discovering this place, we'll soon have to book a spot for then tent.

Cheers. Mick

Its yours mate, but save me a spot - don't like crowds hehe.. Few nice spots just of the track too.

I hope the Oakover is dry and traversable. If not I may have to head south to the Talawana too.

I think we have a bit of time to explore the area, before the tourists come in force in a few years. A RAP group sounds good to me.

Alan

If you are on Christie Crossing , then you are already on Balfour Downs. The owner is quite approachable - Don (last name's gone for now). He was not approving travel south along his roads when we tried in about July 2007. That might have been due to station activities - not sure of reason.

Got bogged at one of the sandy crossings - not easy. Track indiscernible in places.

Cheers

Hi Beal I did the Rudall river July 07 taking in Q Desert baths camping at coolbro creek, down throughTjingkulatjatjarra pool, where there is a plaque on the tree about a couple of brothers that were prospecting in that particular area in the 30s. Out past currun currun rockholewe camped at hanging Rock, very spectacular, then on past meeting gorge and at Tchukardine pool, as previously mentioned there is a jar under the tree with several messages we left a message in there as well. This particular pool would make a great camping spot for about 3-4 vehicles, after raking up all the donkey crap carried on west through a right turn west of Bocrabee hill carried on across Christie crossing. We did travel through a lot of enclosed wattle track fairly indistinct i9n lots of places, we were using oziexplorer and continued on west past Mt hodgson, a bit further down headed north across the Davis river and onto Skull springs where we spent a couple of days there and up to running waters.
The wildlife through all of that area consisted of donkeys, camels, dingos, and one part there were some brumbies
If you like I can email you you the track file which is about 700kb,
the file also shows track back to Nullagine and includes Marble Bar and Newman.

Hi Nugget. Would appreciate any info on the track and a track file would be excellent. I am new to this system though. Can you send the info through Exploroz to my e-mail? Look forward to receiving it and thanks again.

Hi Nugget.

If you like why don't you upload the plotfile to this website in plotswap? That way we could all easily access it.

Cheers

Hi Nugget,

Look at the left hand side of the webpage for "Search by Topic".

Find "Plotswap" and click on it.

You will be taken to the main plotswap page where you can access the files.

Click on "Load a Plot File" and away you go.

I think the files have to be "Oziexplorer" compatible.

Thanks Alan, I will give it a go. The file should be OK as I use oziexplorer for all my remote area trips.
I am only a visitor to this site but I suspect the down load to the plot file should be OK.

Beal - Have uploade plot file, Rudall River it is in 2 parts, I have been having dificulty with the file I tried to join the tracks together, but failed miserably. Part 1 to Desert Queen baths and Part 2 NW of DQ baths across to Marble Bar via Hanging Rock Christies Crossing etc. There is a couple of gaps in the plot file only small distances due to the GPS dropping out. I don't believe that they are only minor and you won,t get lost as there is only one track.

Thanks Nugget. Much appreciated. I am in the process of downloading the files now. I am still learning about the GPS, but I presume the datum points are for WGS84. Got caught a few years back on a walk down the Shoalhaven with wrong map/GPS setting.

Thanks again.
