No 1 in my opinion is GME for it's easy to use controls, Quality and Clarity, No 2 for Quality and Clarity is ICOM but can be very complicated for a novice, I won't even mention the other brand.
Both mentioned sets are of course UHF , the most popular that all the Truckies and travellers use these days,

I totally agree Doug. Although this might interest you. It certainly blew me away.

A couple of years ago I was working in the Pilbara Region and got to talking to a radio tech from Karratha. (I used to be a Comms Tech at Western Power, so I liked the opportunity to talk "shop" now and then.)

This guy was telling me how they used to install UHF CB's with remote head units under the seats of their fleet 4WDs. When the vehicles did creek crossings and the water poured in, the radios got swamped and died.

As an exercise they set up the three well known brands in a simulation to see if any one was better than the others at keeping the water out.

Result? That "other brand" came up trumps!

Mind you they concluded that it was easier to mouint their existing radios on the cargo barrier and avoid the problem altogether.

Cheers,

Russ.

I too agree with Doug re the GME tx3200. Simple, compact and robust. The only fault that I have found with mine is that the microphone switch packed up. Something to do with dust and abuse???lol Apparently according to the 15 year old at audiocom,"common problem with this one, are you interested in sub subwoofers..." you get the picture. Even if it does pack up, its only $30 for a new mike, which would be available in most major regional centres im sure.

They still fetch a good price second hand, so it would be worth spending the extra couple of dollars to get a new one IMO

Otherwise, clarity is good, robust and very simple to operate. The only thing that I personnaly would like to see different is the ability to switch between simplex and duplex on all channels at once with the push of one button (mainly for when I have the radio on scan). Definately not a fault with the unit, just something that I would like.

good luck

Mike

Hi Zacc,

I just bought a GME TX3440. great unit if you lack space for even a remote head unit like the GME TX3420. Not cheap at $382, but the main unit fitted under the console, volume is very good, and the unit is easy to use.

Icom!

not the cheapest, but they are the best

GME

Excellent radios. the TX3440 (above) is a really versatile unit, although I did find the controls a bit fiddly - personally, but no doubt I would get used to it

Agreed re GME - anything they have is quality and at a competetive price - I use a 6200 handheld - I also use Icom in the car - quality unquestioned there too it seems.

I'll add my vote for GME

I have the TX4400 in car and a 601 handheld, have never let me down and easy to operate.

I also have an old AM CB (from that afore unmentioned brand) for touring with mates who also have AM because the UHF can be a little hard to get a free channel on near big regional centres and cities. They (AM's) are as cheap as chips these days probably around $20 - 60.

Hi zacc.
I bought 2 GME handhelds, TX6200 (5 watts) and the TX610 (1 watt).
Got them online from Prestige Communications

overnight door to door delivery - good price - found them excellent to deal with.
cheers

Rob, UHF is only line of sight. In flat country this could be up to 50 km if your lucky. Bonz is RIGHT, If you want coms over greater distance you will need a HF or sat phone.

Hi
I have the GME 3200 in my Troopy but also have the Icom ic40s handheld for carrying around and to take on my fishing quad bike.
As an experiment I tried the Icom on the car aerial (a 6.5db gain) and its performance was even better than the GME the only down side was the external aerial adapter price, at about $65!
I believe the new Icom 41s has a different external aerial adapter and is much cheaper, Prestige list it at $29!
Overall though as said both are excellent radios, but I am leaning more towards the Icom now.
