My father rang me today with the news that he's '01 3L patrol appears to of hemoraged internally.
With about 210000k's on the clock, He went to start it after it has been sitting for approx 2 weeks, only to find it hydraulic itself.
Oil appears OK but its missing some coolant, He also noticed that it hasn't been quite right for some time.
He may get away with just a head gasket, or it may be something more sinister, such as cracked head, won't know till they pull it apart.
What I'm after, is what have other done (worst case scenario here) and how much has it cost them when faced with possible major rebuilt on the 3L?.
Dad is working in Kalgoorlie and doesn't really need it (patrol) but was gunna get rid of it cos he no longer trust's it to tow the 2.5 ton van, and is considering trading it in straight of the back of the tow truck!

Hi Shane,
Google is your mate.....Queensland Motor Recyclers,
I used them a while ago when I replaced the donk in my Pajero.
A new long motor TD, bare, or, a low k import, complete, was a tad under $3000. Hope that makes sense, lol, retyped it 3 times and still scratching my head. Delivery to Perth was under $100. I went for the low k import.
Email them for a price, well worth it.

Usual disclaimer: Not affiliated with them.

Errrr... If you meant ME,
I was after information from others that have forked out big coin getting work done, only for someone to pop up and say, "had you spoke to X, it would've been heaps cheaper, hence to post. I'm seeking info so that when the time comes for a decision, we know what cards we are playing with, Dunno how much Nissan will charge, remembering that no-one has had a close look yet, maybe only head gasket, point is, 3.0L have been around (and blown up) long enough for common long term failures to surface if any, apart from H.P.S (holey piston syndrome).
The old man will weigh up the pro's and cons once they pull the top off, either way he's NOT planning on keeping it, never was, nor does he want to bodgie it up either.

Shane D, Head gaskets and cylinder head problems are quite common.Once you go through the motions of doing the head up its just about worth it to pull the motor out and replace it. Nissan had a special on recently where you could by a brand new long motor for $5200.00. Not sure if theres any left though. If just doing the head, and I mean doing it properly expect to pay $3000 to $3500.
