I haven't seen the cans you're referring to but in my view if it's meant for "drinking" water there shouldn't be any plastic taste. I use the light blue container which specifically states it is for drinking water and there's not a hint of plastic taste. I also live on a rural block and we rely on rain water, there is absolutley no plastic taste coming from any of the 3 large plastic tanks and there never has been.
So I have reservations that the containers you have are suitable for "drinking" water.

Plastic neeeds to be graded as 'food standard' compliant. Other pastics can have pots of toxins and other nasties that MAY leach out and into the food chain.

I'm in the ADF and we have been using green plastic jerry cans for a long long time.. I've been drinking water from them for 16 years at least now and I am yet to drink water out of them that doesn't have a plastic taste. Degrees ot plastic taste vary, but they are all tainted that way. just the price to pay I suggest.

Vanilla essence left lying in the jerry can will help. Lie it on different sides for a day at a time. 50:50 with water will do.

I agree with this method, use it to rinse out my camelback bladders, works a treat.
