There were 2 separate problems:

#1 Cat converter disintegrating and getting sucked back into the motor causing it to use oil - was fixed about 2002/03, and may have been a recall in Aus.

#2 The butterfly valves in the intake can loosen their screws, fall off and get sucked through the motor. The american recall for this happened in April 2005.

My guess is that if you buy a post April 2005 model, you are in the clear on both counts.

Stephen,
You can also find more detail on the recall thread of the Australian Xtrail Forum.
Might take a couple of days to read through that stuff :-))

Cheers

Cheeky buggar Stefan, LOL, na but I wouldnt mind the fuel economy of the xtrail in the prado. $130 a barrel by the end of the year will make the prado quit expensive to fill up and run. Maybe a new suzuki vitara Tracker but in the new 1.9 t/d. (9/10L per 100) Got one advantage the wife likes them but dont sell enough aftermarket gear for them not even a snorkel. Friends have one in V6 bloody juice guzzler, 13/14L per 100 on there way down from Queensland dearer then the prado. If I win lotto maybe a new 120 T/D would be nice. Ground clearance was the main reason we got rid of the grand vitara last time + a bleep y 65L tank (for memory). Regards Steve M

Yep I know what you mean....$180 for 120lt of diesel.

It is really starting to make sense for me to buy a crappy 250cc bike to commute to work on!
