Hi all, I currently have a 17ft Jayco towed by a 6cyl Jackaroo. In the next few months we will be upgrading the van to a larger model with manufacturers ball weight spec of 200kg and 2200kg Tare weight. We therefore need to upgrade the tow vehicle. I have been looking at new Pathfinder, Patrol or Prado. I was wondering with the wealth of knowledge from all subscribers to this
forum, what your experiences are regarding these vehicles towing such a load. Thanks in advance.

I was a bit surprised to see the towing capacity of the prado was only 2500. With all your gear and sundries, that put you close or even over the limit.

Heavy load = heavy vehicle = Patrol !!
The bigger the tow capacity of the 4x4, the easier the job of towing will be !!

Hi Gronk,
Thanks for the advice. One thing I should have mentioned in my post is that I want an auto turbo diesel. The Patrol is then limited to 2500kg. Not sure why when the manual turbo is 3200kg.

The automatics have a tendancy to overheat with the bigger loads & as such derates the maximum towing weight.
In addition, the braking provided normally by the engine through a manual gearbox is much less thru an auto & so the braking reserve in the vehicle is also reduced.
