Hi All

Just wondering what the Waeco Unplugged is like compared with similar portable fridges from Waeco or Engel?

What is the battery life like and how long is the battery designed to last for?

Will.

For those that have not seen one look Here

They are basicly the 35ltr fridge (reduced in capacity to 32ltr, due to inbuilt battery) with its own battery, I woluld imagine that the battery is only good for a day trip or overnight and that you will have to charge it again or leave it connected to power and just use the internal battery system as needed away from the car???

Gday Colin,
Unfortunately Waeco won't tell us how big the battery is. But if the fridge only weighs 23.5 kgs, then the battery can't be very big. I'd guess that its a 12Ah gel cell, from what I see on the photo. It may struggle to work overnight on a warm night. I think they are marketing it as a esky.

Warranty on battery is 12months.

I think the internal battery is 18 Amp Hour capacity

the Waeco website claims up to 17 hours as a fridge

I'd say suitable for a day trip without power, or overnight running only

Ask yourself this "will I use the feature"

It's not cheap and the fridge is smaller because of the battery pack, that works well in theory, while new, but only time will tell how often you may need to change the battery over the life of the fridge, and regardless what may be said here, the Weaco is a good fridge that should last many years.

I feel a tradie or remote worker may get good use from such a fridge, will you???

Anyone know what a replacement battery costs ?

If the battery dies when the warranty runs out after 12 months then the annual mtc cost will be 'interesting'.

18Ah SLA batteries cost $65 from Jaycar. I can't vouch for the quality.

The battery is definitely 18ah and is not really worth considering if you don't have backup. The 17 hours is not a realistic figure. I've got the RAPS 36 and if I get a steady 18 hours out of that running my FF40 I'd be very happy.

However, you can use it, like all waecos, with other charging systems but for the price it is not a good idea. Ananconda are offering a deal, for a similar price, for a CF50 with RAPS 36, insulating bag and fixing kit.

Hi Will.
I watched a show called Creek to Coast on Brisbane 7 last sat night.
They had a story on the new Waeco & said it would run as a fridge for 17 hours(5degrees) or as a freezer for 6 hours(-15 degrees).
Hope this helps.

Is just has me absolutely baffled why anybody would pay that sort of money for a 36l fridge........I'm starting to believe the people who say there is to much money out there are right and they can chuck whatever on the market and somebody will buy it. Just imagine something like that was for sale 10 years ago....people would have had a good laugh and walked away. I must be getting old :-)

You're right Reiner - people will be sucked into buying almost anything these days. When I first saw it advertised I did have a good laugh.
Cheers from the Moose

When you consider batteries are just a disposable item theres no way in hell I dbuy an all in one system. I assume the battery is expensive possibly hard to get and maybe difficult to change

I have a good idea. Toss out the battery, make a bigger cabinet, fill it with ice. Cheaper, lighter, easier, will last longer than the claimed 17 hours (on a cold day in Victoria) and very portable.

Lets do the math

For $1199 RRP you get a self powered CF35 that lasts 17 hrs o its own battery. Whoo souds great.

Now you get a regular CF35 for $869 RRP. You then get yourself a battery box with plugs, etc ($50) and a 90AH deep cycle ($150) which you can also use for oter power needs as well.

You still have chage left over and now power to run the same size fridge for close to 2 days!

Lets not understate the life expectency of the Waeco internal battery which you will probably have to replace after a few years and can only use a geniune Waeco replacement at a premium price.

Nice gimmick though.

I also saw the creek to coast thing the other day and thought it was a great idea and then I thought about it some more and realised that I never take the fridge I have out of the car anyway, so whats the point. I couldnt lift mine out when ity is full anyway.
