Hi all
I have just completed regrasing the front bearings on the GQ (90 model manual hubs) No problem doing them I found it fairly easy and straight forward exept for the front right. When i tighten all six allen bolts the wheel will not turn under hand power and if i back the bolts out to where the are only finger tight the wheel spins freely. Took it for a drive for about 5k's and grease was leaking out. Pulled it apart, checked everything put it back together and the same thing.

What The !

Steve.
The strange thing about "re packing/regreasing" bearings is that you dont really do much at all.

A good mate who has owned 4wd's all his life ( I have only been involved with them since 1954) agrees with me, why bother?
You pull them down, there is a film of grease all over the rollers, clean it off, put a slather back on, and what did you achieve?

New grease? What was wrong with the stuff you washed off? And you are only replacing the film that exists over the rollers anyway.

Then you end up with your sort of problem

OK, if discoloured, dirty, there is crud getting in. And new grease is not going to fix that for too long. New seals are what is required there. Best bet is to examine for that, otherwise leave well alone

And whilst there, what about the rear wheel bearings? No one ever seems to give them a thought. But they are loaded as much (often more) than the front.

I reckon just getting a headache you dont need. I have never in over 55 yrs. of 4wd ownership and a shyteload of miles/km's specifically repacked front wheel bearings at a given mileage.

2 bobs worth only!

I know what you mean. I have had many cars in my life and wheel bearings were never an issue. The only reason i have done this is because my front right hand side had a coming together with a light post and with the bullbar being pushed back into the wheel and rim damage a clicking noise started so i thought it was time for a stripdown and inspection.

What you have done is put the locating collar for the hub around the wrong way.

Take it all out and turn it around.

Matt
does that mean that the collar goes on before the hub gear ?

Steve

I did the same thing with my nissan and wondered WTF!!!!

You have to remove the hub gear i think, and turn the locating ring around so the recess is facing out from memory. You will see what i mean when you get it apart.

Then refit the hub gear.
