As everyone knows this a great
forum and an invalubale resource but would anybody think that having different sections to break it up a bit would work better?
You could have a 4X4 , caravan, location sections etc just to make things a bit easier to find.
The biggest problem I find is that it moves through so fast that not every post is getting the "airtime" and help the post it deserves.
Any thoughts, good or bad?
Woody

. . . and the other reason people stay here is because of the warm repsonse they get - from MOST people here, who do know how to accept those with different ideas.

I'm not saying it is broken, its just funny how the posts are all sorts of questions, jumbled up when it could be made easier to navigate with different sections like all the other types of forums out there like fishing and 4wd forums.
I love this
forum and have picked up some handy info over the years that I have been logging on.....so no I'm not new, just quiet.

This question/suggestion comes up a few times each year and has for quite a few years. Some of us find this layout easier than the categorised style of other forums.

Hi Woody,
You can follow the more popular threads by selecting "Response Time" rather than "Thread Id" on the
Forum Display Options on the index page.
The
Forum Search Option gives you ways to find things of interest to you.
thanks for your input,

I'm really surpised that "Thread ID" is used as the default.

Sometimes when you genuinely have a question you want answered then it does go through too fast at the expense of OT posts.
But really it shouldn't change. a lot of times the OT posts are the most interesting and fun.
To be honest i didn't think people felt so strongly about buying a particular brand of car fridge over another brand!

The
forum is great as it is, no need to chance a thing. I really enjoy the eclectic nature of the discussions and it often promps consideration of issue that I hadn't even thought of.
I would like the search facility to be a bit more specific though. Trying to find past threads on specific subjects can be difficult. If you enter the word INSURANCE, for instance, 122 pages come up and none of the first page has any mention of insuance. Perhaps that could answer WoodyWA's suggestion.

Woody.
Your criticisms would carry a lot more weight if you were a paid up member. I’ve managed to do it for a number of years from the other side of the world, (well almost). So I reckon you could to. This site is dependent on members subs for its very existence. Changes take time and money as you well know.
Anyway I think the site is great the way it is, as Gramps said, it’s natural selection.

It wouldn't surprise me if Woody never becomes a paid up member now.
He (or she) asks a simple innocent question and he (or she) gets strips torn of him (or her).
Good-onya for asking Woody. It was a good question. It annoys me too how the important threads (the ones about 4wdriving and exploring the country) go off into never-land too quickly and the ever increasing number of VERY Off-Topic threads (the ones where friends use this site as a bulliten board / chat room) hang around for way too long.
Not directed at you personally Clive.
Cheers to all.

Al,
There was enough "heat" in the thread to actually make Woody apologise for his (or her) question. I did noticed your usual smiles :)) and also your followup post. I'm making a general comment not specifically singling out individual posters.
Al you've been around this site a long time, surely you can remember when there was less agro, and it was fun when the occassional knobhead made a stupid comment and we could take the mickey. Now there is agro and self-rightessness all around it seems.
Cheers

Hi Hairy.
Yes it probably was a bit harsh but to me it’s a bit like not voting in an election then complaining about the government. This site takes a lot of David and Michelle’s time and money and we should all support it with our subs. I seem to remember you saying similar things as you joined last year, which was good move on your part. Anyway Hairy we need to keep having a laugh about it and not get too serious.

Al,
I can agree some threads get quite heated but that's not unexpected given the varying personalities on this site. I honestly did'nt think there was any real heat in this thread at all. This particular subject ( + editting of posts ) has been done to death over the years.
As far as less agro on this site, we both remember when there was a lot less agro in everyday life. It may be that we're all a little overly sensitive at times.
I hope Woody does come back The more the merrier :)))

I would like to see an additional button that allows you to EDIT your own posts rather than have to post another follow up.
Reason:- Forgot something you meant to include or spelling mistakes etc.

That won't happen.
There has been numerous posts about this one and David won't even humour us with the idea.
Lat year there was a post on a 4wd clubs
forum that was cut and pasted onto this one and they continually changed it on their
forum to cover their arses. very funny but it also makes this
forum much better as posters have to stand by what they have posted.
Who cares for spelling mistakes??
If you left info out of your post do a follow up......... To easy.
Cheers Kev

There's a very easy technology fix to that.
The latest edit always gets displayed (e.g. if you need to correct some misinformation or a typo) but you have auditability by letting anyone access an earlier version by just clicking on the list of earlier versions.
Forums which do allow complete editing do work, and there are no complaints posted about editability.

Gday,
Im with most others...When it works, leave it!
I (very rarely) have a read on 4x4 action (monthly) , every time someone comments on a post , it goes to the top of the list. All this seems to do is keep a lot of old crap going.
If no one comments on something your post, wait till it goes back a couple of pages and re post it. If no one comments again its probably not worth a comment or people just don't have any advice.
Cheers
Hairy

Good point Woody,
We need to keep reviewing what we do otherwise we get in a rut.
I am happy the way it is though.
Do use other forums where it is broken up into topics, but as others say, it is interesting to read of other comments not related to what i do.
And I think the good thread search function makes up for the jumble. One of the best I have seen, so you can list posts on a topic if you want.

Woody have you played with the
Forum Display settings??
It will allow you to customize / personalize the way the
Forum behaves and displays for you.
It can make it so much more user friendly and will allow you to display the last 100 posts on the front page which normally hang around for quite a few weeks and to set the
Forum to display the most recently posted threads which will go back to the top.
The last feature is Thread Watch which will allow you to follow all posts to a thread you have selected to be watched.
have a look and play with the settings available, I think it will help you.
Cheers
Oh almost forgot the Search Function which will allow you to search back for years if need be.

Lovely dog? Pah! He is driving me crazy - crapping all over the house and stealing clothes to chew on etc etc. Sleeps all bloody day and scratching at the door and wining at night! Oh its worse than a new born baby!!! A few weeks ago he started "eating" Baxter (pet rabbit) - he can easily chase and catch him, pins him down with his tiny feet and starts chomping on the back of his neck. Leah worked out we have 13 mouths to feed in our house with all our animals now (although she says he only counted the worm farm as ONE). I must be mad!!
