Have a look through the forum archives. I know the landcruiser owners online (LCOOL) website has good info too. Basically pros: cleaner and cooler air; less obstructed airflow into engine; safer doing deep water crossings.
cons: cost.

If you remember that a snorkel is designed to keep water out of the engine then you'll be fine.

If you think it is some sort of performance enhancing air ram then you'll be sadly disappointed.

They are a general improvement on most ORE air intake setups. The plumbing used to get the iar to the airbox will negate any perceived high performance air flow improvement.

It does increase power very slightly, so slight that it wouldn't be noticable. Probably helps due to airflow that is less obstructed.

Large, straight air directly into the engine rather than having to get sucked in through small openings under wheel arches then winding its way into the engine. There is a good article on the Landcruiser owners online (LCOOL) website on this issue.

Check it out.

Not necessarily agree. After fitting snorkel my 1HZ + DTS turbo, breathing feels much easier. Yes there is some plumbing involve, but standard intake in 80 way too obtrusive and it is almost impossible to make it worse. Although main reason for snorkel (as name suggest, actually) to make safer water crossing, also it is greatly improve situation in dusty environment, particularly when going behind other vehicle.
