Stop Lamp Switch Problem????

Since I've fitted the Prodigy brake controller I've noticed sometimes that when I hop in and put my foot on the brake (no trailer on) the 2 little indicator lights on the controller don't light up - which says that the brake lamp switch isn't sending a signal that the brake has been applied (and no the brake lights don't work either).

Now I've been hanging under the dash in a very uncomfortable position trying to find the problem with a test light.

Here in lies the problem and my question........it only stops working intermittently. Now I would have thought that if the switch is buggered it won't work at all.......not intermittently???

I just don't want to go and buy a new switch and find the problem still exists. I've checked the wiring and nothing is loose.

Anyone have any other ideas??? (As I'm heading away tomorrow)

Hi not sure of the unit BUT could the controller be faulty not the brake switch. Are the brake lights working all the time???

Hi JD,

No I would have to assume the controller is OK because it works just fine when it gets a signal from the brake switch....and thats all it has to do with the brake light circuit.

Thanks.

I had a similar problem with my Prodigy except lights wouldn't work at all.
Turned out to be a blown brake light fuse caused by a damaged wiring loom to the tow bar.

Cheers Dave

Hughesy, what car are we talking about and exactly where did you connect the red prodigy wire too?

Its a HZJ105 cruiser wagon (no ABS). I joined the red prodigy wire in just above the stop lamp switch (green/orange wire from memory) ....the wire that only gets power when you depress the brake pedal.

For all I know this could have been a problem since I've owned the car (ie before fitting the prodigy) but unless you have someone you know following you and knows when your using the brake...you'd never know. It only became obvious because the prodigy unit displays when the brake pedal is being used.

The fault is intermittent so can't be a fuse and the brake lights don't light up when no signal is going to the Prodigy....hence my Q about the Stop Switch itself.

I've rung Toyota here in Broken Hill and they can't get a switch in till friday and Repco told me you can only get Genuine.......

Any ideas??

Your suspicions are correct, the prodigy takes a reference from the brake light circuit, it does not (cannot) interrupt the circuit. I'd say it is a pretty safe bet that the switch is faulty.

Fairly serious problem considering it will affect van braking, is it worth hunting around boneyards for a switch?

BTW, it is recommended that the red wire runs all the back to the plug. On quite a few vehicles, the brake light switch is only a small offshute of the entire brake light circuit.

You didn't use 3M click joiners, did you?

The vans only a Jayco Dove so not that weighty and I'm not overly concerned about not having trailer brakes....more so not having actual brake lights. But I'm heading straight out from Broken Hill to Cameron Corner...so traffic lights and trafic won't be an issue ;))

No didn't use them click joiners (although I'll admit that is what I used first and changed it to the above when I first noticed this problem), I miraculously managed to split the wire and put blade ends on the wires and a "T" or 3-way joiner to connect in the prodigy wire. These joins are all tight and there is nothing loose.

You would just think that with a switch it would stop working and that would be that???

Had some issues with the missus Falcon a few months ago with a relay that would stop working intermittently (engine start). Had me stuffed for ages until I replaced the relay and haven't had a problem since. I would have thought a relay would only work or not work and not both.......

Hughesy

Those controllers give funny signals when the van is not connected and especially when the engine is not running - at least in my experience with a now 10 year old Voyager in an 80s L'c.

I reckon I'd hook up the van, run the engine and put my foot on the brake and only worry if it still happens. Even then, I'd tow the van slowly down the drive and apply the brakes to just the van and separately put my foot on the brake and see how it works.

The caravan web sites are full of problems with controllers and especially with Fords, but in your case I reckon your worries might disappear once you are hooked up and running.

One trick though - not related - put a bigger fuse in the brake light circuit as I found the van brake lights overloaded the 15 amp fuse fitted.

Happy travels and good braking

Max

The go is to folow Dunarana's advice.

How many wires are there on the cold side (not active until the pedal is depressed) of the brake light switch

Hi Don,

One wire in...one wire out. Wire out is the one I've attached too.....and its the one that only gets voltage when the brake pedal is pushed.

I've pretty well come to the conclusion that it must be a faulty switch.

Just didn't think that something electric could work intermitently.

Have you checked for power on the hot side of the switch when the fault occurs

From memory i thought there was more than 2 wires on a 100 series brake light switch but i must be wrong (does yours have factory cruise control)

Silly question but is there only 1 switch on the pedal assy

Sorry i just reread your original post & saw it was a HZJ105 without ABS so i assume it is a standard model so disregard my cruise control question
