Fantastic! Arrived back yesterday - max 27 min 16 and now wind or blowing dust. In fact not many dust storms over the summer which is significant for desert travel. Haven't had time to do comprehensive road/desert report - too busy getting Big Red out of the house but will try and post roads etc tonight or tomorrow.

G'day Ruth
Hope all is good for you up there !!
Got a strange question for you...If we fuel up at Oodnadatta to travel to Dalhousie (about 170km) ready to get over to you...
Wouldn't it be false (fuel) economy to do a round trip from Dalhousie to Mt Dare (about 140km) for a top up.
This seems to be a recommended thing- but apart from have an ale at the 'new' bar- I can't see a reason ??
What do you reckon??
Cheers- see ya in August

With 180 + 20 litres of fuel you should romp it in.

However, you could go around via Eringa waterhole to Mt Dare and then come over to Dalhousie that way you get to see another bit of road (Eringa waterhole is nice area) and still get to Mt Dare and Dalhousie on the way over to Birdsville.

Few years ago, went Mt Dare to about 10k short of Eyre Creek where flood waters forced us to return and we got back to Oodnadatta (had standard tanks 145l + 20 in jerry) - guage was pretty empty by the time we got back to Oodnadatta.

Enjoy the trip

Alan

Well, Signman, don't think I need to reply - personally I would drink at Mt Dare!!! LOL. See you when you get here, whichever way you come.

Good Morning Alan,
Thanks for the tip...

It's almost exactly the same distance Oodnadatta-Dalhousie-Mt. Dare-Dalhousie (323km)
As Oodnadatta-Eringa-Blood Ck-Mt Dare-Dalhousie (320km)
So we will be doing the latter..
This will be our 3rd trip across 'The Desert' and we try to do a different route each time we venture out and about..

Yes but you have only used 70k worth of fuel against 180 k worth of fuel if the last fill was oodna.
That 110k difference might mean the difference between riding and walking for some ;-))

Hi traveller
Thanks for your response...
I'm still trying to work it out. The way I see it, I'd only have 30km worth of fuel benefit. and probably spent about 3 hours for that benefit..
Shouldn't be a problem tho- I have 180 litres on board- and with a 20 litre Jerry should be fine

the way i see it is if you take three more ten ltr jerry cans and fill up at Oodnadatta, use the three ten ltr cans asap. then you save three hours driving and not so tired and 30 kg is not much at all for a short time.
cheers shane.
