I bought a Satellite phone yesterday brand new by ringing a
Melbourne company (motorola 9500)
It was sent to my door by 9am this morning at a cost for the phone of $795 + $28 a month for 18months and free connection...
$1.98 a min for outgoing at my cost with a .40c flagfall as opposed to $1.20 a min with the same flagfall for incoming, the caller only to pay (free for me to recieve)..
For the amount of times it will be used whilst i am away i think that is great value and it can go everywhere i go if i want...
I had been tossing the idea of HF vs SAT for ages and $800 outlay with a dribble of an ongoing cost won over a massive outlay with a dribble of an ongoing cost...........
I am not advertising, just sharing info........_____________________________________________

Voxson - just as reassurance - our five years experience with Satphones says you have gone the right way.
We bought our satphone when I retired (you feel rich when you have just got your super, and the phone was real expensive then - $6 grand!). We pay the same as you for calls and monthly account, and our phone has done about 80,000 kms on some pretty rugged roads (including the Canning), and we have been able to find a satellite everywhere.
In the occasional deep valley (eg
Kangaroo Island), you have to climb the
hill to get a signal but we have found it very reliable. We have used it with a laptop to send emails (slowly), and have kept daily contact with family in very remote areas.
We did not want to drive with a broom handle antenna sticking up at front or rear of the car, and really do not like the squawking of a daily sked when we are in remote
camp sites, so did not go the
HF Radio way. Are happy that we made the right decision.
We are looking forward to another run through the centre and around the
Kimberley in July, and the phone is still in working order. I
test it every few months when at
home, and recharge the battery just to be sure.
Happy travelling!
Max
