Can anyone tell me if overnight camping is allowed on Monkira Station on the Diamantina River. A small group of us will be travelling between
Windorah and
Bedourie, leaving from
Eromanga, in early August and I am looking at an overnight stop. We will be fully self contained. Any help welcomed.
Cheers
James

Just been there working - I didn't see any camping spots and from a liability point of view they probably prefer that you don't
camp on their lease.
Best to try and make contact with them and ask I guess! :-)
Beaut camping @
Windorah but! :-)
Also some fantastic cabins available (seperate from the cvan park)
Bedourie - we could take or leave - not that impressed :-(
Our personal opinions only!

Loved
Windorah - stayed there last July for 3 nights before drifting SW to
Adelaide - in the caravan park - gravel surface (understandable for that parched region) - great to wander around the town and see how those people survive out there..... you don't often meet a totally blind petrol station owner / operator...... nor see a helicopter parked by the street, as if it were no more than a dune buggy.

Hmmmmm - is that trick question :-o) ......... maybe not - re his mobility I know not - just sat there behind the dusty console and took the cards, swiping and tapping up the transactions - he's reputed to very sharp re the $ of course - legend has it that he was fiddled once by a motorist - just the once !

But isn't the 'international' size swimming
pool and hot spas at
Bedourie? If that's right then you MUST stop there at least long enough for a swim
Happy days
george
And try to meet the local police officer - he's a smashing bloke!

Davoe,
I get it. What a classic Aussie flick that was. Shame when it gets trashed though.
Matt.

Darian you must either be a
young fella or a old one,
See if you can find a vid store with the 1982 vid Runningon empty
classic ausie car movie and it may have been brought out in DVD
and you wll get the joke. I nearly spat beer onto my computer with laughter when you mentoioned a bind servo owner in the outback

I fess up - I'm an old fella (relatively speaking) - a curmudgeon too - we rarely hire DVD's - that would explain my puzzlement I guess - that, and a generally scant appreciation of many things "modern" wouldn't help ........... but camping toys are different - then I'm happy to join this new millennium :-o)......

You'd be entitled as a traveller to
camp on the river banks, but still adjacent the
Bedourie road - any further in from the road and you need direct permission of the lease holder (fair enough I'd say). It'd be fair bet that the place will have seen hoards of campers over the years anyway - under such pressure, the lease holders often put a fence down the back, just to let us travellers know how far back we can go off the road.

James, what Stocky says is quite true. The cabijns at
Windorah are called Cooper Cabins, the name of the service station owner is Merv (he does have a great sense of humour and doesnt suffer fools gladly) - no-one is scared of Merv but by gee, you wouldn''t want to take on Bub his wife.
As for the Diamantina, it is more than possible that by August there wouldn't be any water in the waterholes in any case. It's low now and very dry in the area - if there was water still in the waterholes then probably there would be cattle in that area and property owners wouldn't like people there as
well.
There are gravel pits and quiet spots on the side of the road you will be travelling - we like gravel pits because they are flat, not so dusty and usually no prickly bushes! and you can get down into the borrows and away from the wind if its blowing.

Hi Ruth,
We were planning our next trip for the end of May, and thought it would be good to do a loop that takes in Diamantina NP,
Lark Quarry,
Longreach, Welford,
Windorah, and back down to
innamincka.
Do you think there will be much water left up there in 5-6 weeks time?
Cheers
Phil

Phil I thought you were too busy working this year to do any trips? You'll be right for water in most of the
places you are intending to travel in - we haven't been up to Diamantina yet to see how the fish are biting. Beautiful
waterhole. Have fun.

If I did no trips, I'd go crazy! I've been doing some arm twisting (Kathryn's arm) and she will need some peace and quiet, and the odd G&T by then, so we decided to
check the area out after the recent floods. We were hoping for lots of water and some good fishing!!
Haven't decided exactly which way we'll head, but may look to get there in 3 days from
adelaide and take our time after that for the following 2 weeks. Would probably pass through
Birdsville 18/19th May on the way up. Got 5 vehicles going.

Oh good, there's still some G left in the bottle I found in the shed today. Even lemons. We didn't even get one bite yesterday afternoon when we were having peace and quiet (apart from swatting flies) whilst fishing- was better the day before.
Have marked the diary.
