have you considered an i-mate jasjam/dopod pda phone.
it has decent screen, 8g card, ozieCE, connects to bluetooth gps.
also use it as ipod in car for music.
internet, modem, wi-fi and lots of things i don't understand, all in one unit.
it also makes calls on the 3g network apparently. (it does)

BTW google asus and you will probably see computer forums that discuss these things as well

Hi Howie,
had a look at the TyTN II which is similar and has the latest windows Ce6.Great but need something rugged enough to handle the corrugations, dust etc plus just a bit expensive,

TyTN II

Its a lovely piece of gear, cannot see how it would not handle corrugations but your spot on about price !

Ive been eyeing off this unit before it hit Aussie Shores

i got mine 'free' on the telstra $80 plan.
i was already on a $40 plan, which i was pushing over the limit some months, so i looked at it like a 2 year interest free loan and got the i-mate.
ps i did have niggles untill i upgraded to mobile 6, which also allowed me to use 8g micro-sd cards (sdhc)

Hi i have an ASUS A636 similar to the 696 I have found it very good over the last 14 months running Destinator and ozi ce.
you will find the 696 will only use std sd cards not sd/hc cards . 2 gig will be enough for either Destinator or Co pilot and the Hema 4wd complete map pack of AUS.
The A 639 has 1 gig internal memory which i use for Destinator.
And leave the sd card for Ozi maps.
If you end up with an ASUS you can update it to Windows mobile 6 very easily, free update from Asus and it will then run SD/HC memory cards.
The Asus A636 appears to be out of production and hard to find.
But i just found one at an online shop try GOOGLE.
I only ever made one mistake
and that's when I thought I was wrong!

Hi Mary,

I've had an ASUS A639 for over 12 mths now, and am very happy with it. Does all I need. I run Oziexplorer on the laptop, and Ozi CE on the PDA. Comes with 1gig of internal storage, but I run all the Hema maps stored on a SD card (I think it's a 1 gig card, but you could easily get a 2 gig card - they're pretty cheap now). I have a picture of the unit in my profile if you want to have a look.

Cheers, Mark.

Gday,
Yeh Mate, Ive got one...at first I loved it , then I had trouble!
I think Ive soughted it but it took some research!
I had trouble with charging while the GPS was on....not turning off properly.....loosing alignment......and a few other things.
Ive updated my operating system and it seems to have sorted ALL the problems. But it was boloody anoying when it didnt work and all they wanted to do was send it away for another 4 weeks!
(rather than telling me how to do it!)
If my problems are sorted...I reckon theyre great! If not..well???
I think you need to be fairly computer literate to use one as they do so much more than a normal GPS ( they are a computer).

Finally....would I buy another...if not the same thing,...something very similar.

Cheers

Hi Mary, Have had one since Feb and are pleased with Co Pilot operation and it compares ok with our Tom Tom except for the graphic's detail in 3d.
Have had a configuration problem with Moving Map and it mysteriously failing to load the selected Auslig map file on start up after a while.
This issue is being addressed as I reply so will update you on things in a few weeks.
I like the screen mount and reckon it will be a great thing once we get over the teething prob,s
Cheers

Hi Mary, We had a few hiccups again on our trip but I traced it to the 12 Cig connector vibration on the corrugations and playing havoc power supply.
Config as per the settings Westprint supply and its now working a treat. Can supply the config setting if you need them.
Off again into the western desert in 3 weeks.
Cheers
