Well the decision has been made. At the ripe old age of 55 (wife 56) we have decided it is time to give up the well paid (ha ha) city jobs and head out on an extended trip around this great country. We will have to work on the way around but it seems that their is plenty of work in the bush so long as you are willing to have a go at anything. We hope to be able to spend the next 5 or 10 years (health willing) out on the road and hopefully get to meet a few of the members of this forum on the way

So the countdown has begun. Need to do some work on the house so we can rent it out, a bit of work on the Troopy so that I can carry my tinny and a touch of work on the near new van to make us as self reliant as possible.

Hopefully we will be away by the middle of the year but if not then before the end of the year.

It takes a lot of courage to do what you have decided to do. Good luck and enjoy it for those of us stuck at home :))

Scary as hell. Its taken me 2 years to get to the point where I have finally come to a decision. The one thing that has helped is that my folks did the same thing many years ago only they sold up the family farm to take off. No house to go home to or any of those nice comfort blankets. They survived for nearly 8 years on the road.

Hi Lewis

We are about six months away from doing the same thing, we are
just a bit older,I will be 61 and my cook will be 63 in October, our
plan is to lock the house up, and go, we will do a state at a time, starting in Queensland, we dont want to rent the house, as being a
plumber I have seen the damage some people can do, we built the
joint and we dont want some body destroying it. or refusing to move
out at a later date, if things go pear shape on the road.

Cheers

Keep us all posted. If I don't go soon, or the stock market doesn't do a U turn, a lot of us will be screwed by the the inevitable doubling of diesel in the next few years....silverback

Have a fantastic trip and for as long you are willing to do "odd" jobs here and there, you will not go hungry so do not worry...just enjoy. Best of luck to both of you.

Have a wonderful time - leave yourselves open to enjoy and all explore all the wonderful sights and sounds - keep time to smell the roses. Go whichever way the wind blows. Safe journeys.

Lewis, At last, a scenario we can relate to. A little younger perhaps, but as my father (82 yrs old) says... "while you can". My partner and I are planning to exit the rat race on "the trip" at years end or soon after. Working our way around is a given, but, being of the work ethic generation, that should not pose a problem. I am sure that you are in the planning stage as we are. Not surprisingly, there are a lot of things to consider!
Hope to see you around the stump.
