Matt(WA)
Hi all.
I have a 80 Series GLX with a 1HZ and turbo and inter cooler(safari). I have just had my valve clearances' done(valves shimmed) and if you 1HZ is due all I can say is have it done. It has made the engine so much more quiet and seems to have added a little more response. So what can I say get them done, you wont be disappointed! Going for a run up too
New Norcia and
Lancelin over the weekend to give it a
test run. Have a good one and go the BLUES!!!
Cheers and Beers
Matt

Did you do this yourself or did someone do it for you?
I have a 1Hz with a Safari turbo/Intercooler as
well.
I have been thinking about doing it/getting it done myself. Sounds like it's worth doing.

It is not hard to do but there is a Toyota (although you could probably improvise something) special tool that is used to hook under the cam & depress the lifter to remove the shim & there is a large range of shims available (can't remember exactly remember how many but probably around 20 & from memory they around $16 each new )
What you need to do if you haven't got a range of shims available is remove the tappet cover &
check the clearances & any that are not in spec (normally they will be tight) you need to remove the shim, measure it & order the correct size shim to bring it back to spec
This can mean either leaving it apart till the shim arrives or sticking it back together & pulling it apart later on
A bit of a trick to get the shim out is to puff a bit of compressed air in between the shim & the lifter that it sits in through the notch in the side of the lifter & this will cause the shim to pop up & than remove it out with a magnet
Regards Don

I tried to do it myself (1HZ no turbo), but because of the complexities that Don mentioned, I ended up going to a 4WD mechanic who had the gear and the shims. Its amazing the difference it made - I got it done at 100, 180 and 240 thousand, and by the last it was not moving much at all. The first couple are vital though.
Worth doing
