Going over gear tonight for our trip to NT/WA... seriously considering leaving the hand winch behind. The "offroad" parts of our trip will be tracks in Litchfield (NT), Bungle Bungles, Gibb River Rd, Cape Leveque... are any of these places where you would be likely to use a winch? We're planning on sticking to the main routes - I think I'd be more likely to need the winch in state forests in Victoria(!), but not having been to these places before, aren't sure.

Is it just going to be a 40kg deadweight the entire trip? Has anyone been to any of these places and actually needed to use a winch?

cheers

No you won't need a winch, just take a snatch strap and you will be fine, as there will be more than enough people to pull you out if you need it, but I doubt you will need that either.

Cheers Steve.

That's the same line of thought I had - have already packed the snatch strap, winch extension strap and the bow shackles - the hand winch can stay home for this one. Like having my own gear should someone's assistance be required should I get stuck anywhere.

Having done most of theose spots definitly not. i got bogged 2wice
once was on the track into gosse bluff where i pulled off the track to let a guy and camper passed and another was in the hale river bed ruby gorge
Both times just deflating tyres saw me out and both times a snatch was available if required

Yea- you may as well leave your spare wheel & tools home too. You should always assume someone is gunna come along and get you out of the poo !!

Pull your head in - I was asking about a specific piece of recovery gear for a specific region. The recovery and spares tub is overflowing with other items. Hopefully we're not in a position where we need to requests assistance from a fellow traveler, but if that SHOULD be necessary, we've got all of our own equipment to use.

Snatch strap
Winch extension strap
2 equaliser straps
2 x 3.2t shackles
4 x 4.7t shackles
Recovery dampener (for snatching/winching)
Drag chain
Shovel
Axe
Bowsaw
2 compressors

...plus other bits I've probably forgotten about, and that doesn't get into the tools or spares list.

It was a query about a hand winch, not "should we leave our snatch strap at home because someone else should have one, right?".

having lived the best part of my life around the nor west and working throughout the areas you are going, you have sufficent gear on board, particularly during the mid months of the year. It is the busy season and there will be vehicles continually up and down all the roads you mentioned.
