This is a feature that most late model vehicles have in the rear seat belt mechanism & it is there to hold a baby seat secure

If you pull the seat belt out all the way it will go into this mode & it will only retract not extend (if you listen while it is retracting you will hear a racheting noise)

When it is in this mode the belt has to retract all the way in to release it from this mode

It normally happens to either kids who play with the belt & pull the it all the way out or with large people who need to pull the belt out a long way to get it around them

If you look in your owners manual it will tell you about this mode& sometimes there is information about it on the belt id tag itself

Regards Don

Lots of people complain about this thinking the belts are faulty but once they know why it happens it is just a matter of making sure you don't pull the belt all the way out
