I have a T/D 80 series with 320,000 klm we have just started towing and I have noticed it is very sluggish in first & second gear when we start off on hills is there anything I can do to increase power down low, I have just had the injectors replaced.

Thanks, Tony

I have aftermarket turbo on 80 and it pulling very strong from the start. If your does not and you do not have extra-oversized tyres then probably engine has not been looked after. First thing what I would suggest is checking compression. If it is normal and your fuel system is fine then it became puzzle. Simplest way to get smaller tyres or better exhaust, but it should pull well from 1-st gear as is.

Good luck

One more. It been reported that turbo can get clogged with tar and stuff. Block who report it fixed it by spraying WD40 inside turbo, wait it to work and started engine being clear from exhaust. Swears it became better then new. I would rather dismantle turbo for service and cleaning.

Cheers

Intercooler and 3" exhaust will make a big difference and will add some torque, turning up the boost a bit will also.

Diff ratios or tyre sizes.

I'm not an expert on Cruisers, is the td a turbo? If not a diesel with over 300k on it and adding a turbo would place a lot of stress on the old engine.

If you will be doing mainly towing then change diff ratios or get smaller wheels.

I would suggest you get some headers, it will make the engine breathe better and give you more time to rev out in each gear before having to change up keeping the engine in the power band.

Other than that you should tow with my 4.2 diesel GQ and see how yours compares to mine. They are not racing cars when something is hooked on to the towbar but will get you there every time.

There's no need to bite number 1. I did say I wasn't sure about Cruiser engines. My Patrol engine is TD42 and is definitely not a turbo. I was answering the question the best I could. Have you answered the question?

6.5lt chev diesel or install a 15speed to get you going on those hilly bits. By your description the engine is running fine and all the problems are lack of torque down low.

Turbo whiz maybe able to suggest a different turbo to bring on boost earlier.

Have a good one

If fitting a 15speed you might as well fit a C16 Cat and get some real HP.
Cheers Dave....

If its a factory turbo 1HDT then my suggestion is to get the no boost fuel adjusted on the pump, very simple job to increase low down power.

Mathew it is the factory 1HDT should any qualified mechanic be able to do the job or would it require some one that specialises in pumps.

Thanks, Tony

Tony

Any decent fuel shop should be able to perform this for you,are you mechanically ,minded at all.?????

We normally set them up on the dyno so we can show the customer the improvement.

Its not hard if you contact me through email i can help you out.

I have a 94 with aftermarket DTS Turbo. We wound up the fuel and it increased performance by up to 10%. Your best bet is to get it tuned on the dyno to make sure you dont overfuel and make it go bang!
I tow a 6.5 mtr boat long distance at 95 - 100kph with no worries. Any faster and it will start to send the temp gauge up. I am also running bigger tyres, 285/75r16.
There is not much more you can do aside from putting it on gas.
