G'day folks,

We are planning to take the Gary Junction Road to get from WA across to Alice Springs.
I searched the Forum for information regarding any permits that one might possibly need to drive along this road..... I only found a hint that one does need permits. Bur unfortunately I could not find out what sort of permits and where to get them from.

can anyone please help?

looking forward to hearing some helpful hints - thanks in advance - lukas

Try this link Oppikofer.

WA Permits online link

Use the drop down menu - Pilbara - Gary Junction Road.

It usually only takes a couple of days in the post within Australia. It might take a bit longer internationally.

Lukas

You will need Transit Permits from Department of Indigenous Affairs WA or Ngaanyatjarra Council for the Western Australia leg and the same permits from the Central Land Council in Alice Springs for the Northern Territory leg of your journey.

All permits may be applied for online.

Hi Oppikofer
Like others have said above. We will be up that way in June, but coming from the south, up to Kintore. I do not know who many WA Aboriginal Permits that you will need, but you will require 2 from the WA/NT Border inside of the Northern Territory. One permit between the border and Kintore and the other from Kintore back through Papunya and on to Alice. If you are going to head south from Papunya, then you will need another permit heading back down through Tylers Pass.

Where we are going in the NT and into WA, we require 8 permits.

Cheers

I agree with you, Hairy.
Who actually checks to see if you have a permit?
By the way, you can have as much grog as you like, if you are passing through, just as long as it is for your personal consumption.
Not sure about the pot or porn, lol.

Gday Dennis,
Sorry to correct you but...Dont be fooled into thinking you can carry as much grog as you want for personal use!
It is illegal to have ANY alcohol in your possession in MOST aboriginal communities. And the fines are huge!
Your chances getting of caught at the moment are very possible too! (regular road blocks all over the joint)
This post might be of interest to you too....ThreadID: 56770

I should have added.......
I havent been asked for a permit in 20 years. So to answer your question " who checks them"...No one! BUT
With all the intervention stuff going on there is a good chance you do.
Im not sure where you got the idea you can travel through with grog but make sure you check that. There maybee a couple of circumstances where you will get away with it but not too many.

Good Luck

Cheers
