With that happy thought in mind, I am looking at a lot of things that I will need in 3 years time. One will be a small car to replace my wife's lancer. Looking at a small turbo diesel. Anyone know of a web site that directly compares cars as to fuel consumption and proformance.

Gongrats Vince just be careful that you're not labelled as having given up on your work! My bride reckons I'm overly focused on my retirement to the detriment of wanting to improve my financial position via promotion. I have slightly less to go at Xmas 2010.
I just tell her that I'm in training for retirement so that I'll be retirement fit when the day arrives - ah yes without wishing my life away!
Kind regards

Can't give up on work yet, still have to find & train my replacement. We are in an industry where you need to be trained on the job. I'm a fat learner & it took me 20 Years. LOL
I like the idear of training for retirment.
I will start in the 3 weeks I am having off in July for the trip to Innaminika

My retirement is the end of 2009. If you are really serious, you deduct all the weekends, public holidays and leave days you are likely to take and you come upi with a much more comfortable number of "days-to-be-worked". This keeps you mentally/mathematically trained prior to retirement! :-)
cheers

Your spot on Al
Several years ago I worked for the Local Government, it was a 24/7
job, I wore two Pagers and two Mobile Phones, never saw the kids grow up, and the
Cook / Wife ran the house including outside work.
I did this for 26 years, I took a redundancy package, started up my
plumbing business, had less stress, and a family life, the blokes who
stayed on with the Local Government job, are DEAD & BURIED.
Cheers

al and Daza,
Yep. My thoughts exactly.
I threw in the towel 2 1/2 years ago at 54 after doing my sums. Wasn't willing to do the hard yards any more in the corporate world. Was planning on winding down and retiring at about 58.
Have been having a ball traveling this great country.

Hi All
With out being to inquisitive, how old are you Gentlemen, shortly
I will go from full on with my plumbing business, to Semi Retirement,
but, still have an interest in it. looking at 2 months on 1 month off
sort of thing, taking little excursions every two months, just to get
the feel of full time retirement, currently we take a long weekend
once a month and get away up the
beach fishing.
I am 61 this year and the
Cook has been asking me to retire for the
last two years. she reckons I am to bloody greedy, oh
well, a blokes
got a feel the water.
Cheers

Its not that easy Dazza!! I to have a family business which in recent months my son has more or less taken over & I have kept an interest in it, both financially & still a little bit hands on.
But it still seems as if at work all the time because I worry about the bloody thing.
I sort of wish I had of had an ordinary job whereby I could retire on the Friday & if the bloody place got burned down or whatever the following week it would not directly effect me!!
The previous comment about if you dropped dead tomorrow everything would still continue on!! It is so right. Cheers.

I will be 57 in Aug. I will be finishing at my 60th birthday, but taking all my leave before that.
I have just tried the calculations above and now I only have 659 day to go.

I reworked days till retirement using "Day To be Worked" formula much better 235 down to 154 and I'll be 60 Feb 09.
I'm in
Carnarvon and travel to
Geraldton on a regular basis and am very jealous of the
grey nomad's who have just started there annual northward migration.
Plan A is Canada May 09 then
Coral Bay ,
Millstream and Karajini in July
SouthWest accross to
Esperance in Sept/Oct/Nov Then 2010 Jan 18ths traveling arround Australia all the above is subject to change at a moments notice but the broad outline will remain.

Ill be 59 when I finish up at the end of 2009. Then I hope to then have time and the opportunity to go some of the
places that so many of the lucky (organised?) people on this site travel to.

Good onya Vince.
You will enjoy the countdown - I have just 22 days left !!!! And the advice to just count working days is sound - worked better for me.

G'day
Heres a calculator to help you blokes watch the countdown
http://www.timeanddate.com/counters/customcount.html
I know the feeling ! I am currently using the leave I have had unused for last 25 years
I doubt if I will go back to work
Only if the stockmarket has any more major downturns
But like someone said earlier in the thread ; any one of us could be dead next month or year so would it matter then ?
Happy counting
Garry

Geez, after 7 years, it still seems like a few days ago I retired! But after nearly 38 years with the one job, I guess 7 years is nothing.
What do I do now? Well, I've got a haircut planned for Wednesday, so I will have to plan for that. And I think my brother wants me to go fishing with him later this week. Busy busy...

977 days to go for me. Can't wait. Very boring after 45 years in the same job.

Retirement? What's that ?
I'm busier now than I've ever been. And yes it can take half a day just to get a haircut. (I've scheduled that for tomorrow).
Today I had to do lunch with my bro from Sid knee. By the time I'd checked everything online, had a shower and gotten ready it was almost time for lunch! Mind you I did a bit of posting while I was waiting.
But the REALLY cool thing about doing the lunch thing was passing my old workplace and giving it the finger :))
The kids have an expression.."get a life"...well after going through hell for 35 years, I retired and finally got one.

I'm with Footloose. I retired in 1995 at 55 and I am so busy I don't even have time for morning smoko any more. Lucky if I get to happy hour before dark. No I'm not one of those rich buggars when it comes to money but in terms of satisfation I'm on top.
Health wise the body is well and truely aware that the years are catching up but I'm not listening when it complains and the joints ache.To hell with it theres not much a couple of Neurofen won't ease... or a good glass of red at the end on the day.
I too spent my working life 24/7 for the job and missed a lot of the kids growing up. Well I'm making amends and saying thanks to the Minister for Home Affairs by being around and doing what she wants done around the house whern we are home.
We go bush at every opportunity as volunteers on the stations and when home there is always something to do on the van or tug
If I could offer advice to those who are looking at retirement just look at it as a chance to do things that you enjoy or that gives enjoyment to others.
When the epitath reads 1940 - 20?? let it be said that the dash between the dates was something special.
