Old shearer mate says we should go for another drive. When asks
I, next April says he. Where says I, Pilbara says he. Ok says I.
Believe it or not, sometimes our conversations are like that. Mates dont have to say a lot to say a lot.
Anyway, question is what can we expect if we go from Ularu to
Great Northern Highway via Warburton, Heather Hwy & Gunbarrel
to Everard Junction & Carnegie, then west to Wiluna? Around April. Anything on climate, road conditions, fuel availability, must see sights, camps etc. will be most welcome.
4 adults, one vehicle, petrol Jack towing C/t. Previous experience
..Tanami, Ood, Mereenie, Bungle,Birdsville ,GRR , just the usual gravel highways really.
We will pick your brains re the Pilbara as well, but lets get there
first. Thank you kindly in advance...oldbaz.

G'day Hairy, seems not too many noticed. Whats your opinion
on the selected track as opposed to just using the GCR. You
are more local than most....oldbaz

Gday Oldbaz,
Im not the person to be asking about desert tracks....I live here.
Most of my time travelling bush was bore tracks and back roads, we always tried to avoid the major roads. Most communities have short cuts.
I have trouble keeping up with all the names you mob talk about
Most of the roads were called things like "The North fork after Newhaven' or commonly known as the "back way to Kintore"....
Or Alice to Pupunya or Hasst Bluff who be "via the pub" or "NOT"
LOL
When I go on holidays I head for the beach, not the desert!!!!

I did have a mate go across that way not long ago (3 weeks), I think he even joined Exploreoz? Ill send him an email and let you know what he reckons.

Cheers
Hairy

Easier just to go through the GCR and continue on through Laverton to Wiluna. Then out through Meeka and scoot up north.

GCR is wide sandy/gravel track. Warberton Ok to stop o/n. Heather H/Way is so so, Gunbarrel is corregated through to Carnegie. Do take some comms, even in April you can't be absolutely sure of passing traffic.

G'day Footloose, thanks for info. I assume you mean the difference
in road conditions is not made up for by any worthwhile changes
in the scenery or points of interest. Your point re comms is noted.

Hi Oldbaz, depends what you mean by scenery. POI ...there are POI's on both routes, but once again it depends what you want to see and how much trouble you are willing to go to.
The Gun is worthwhile despite the corros, just to have done it but if Wiluna is your goal then I'd still stick with the GCR. The western ranges through to Docker are spectacular.
Just take it easy either way and you'll have a ball.
Let us know what you decide.

Just back from a trip along th Great Central Road. The WA side was good, but NT was corrigated at parts. plenty of fuel along the way too.

G'day Paul, thanks for the info. I assume the fuel prices reflected
the national trend, but we wont be letting that stop the
yearning for outback travel. cheers...oldbaz.

Hi Oldbaz,

There may still be a bit of water on the Gunbarrel in April depending on the seasonal rain of course. GCR is a walk in the park anytime of the year and is a good second option.

Here's the historical climatic data for Carnegie:BOM Link

Looking for adventure.
In whatever comes our way.
