Hi there,
Can anybody tell which are the pros and cons about these 2 tyre carriers for 80series. I am looking for one but cant tell which one is best.
btw, its to carry a 36" simex, so maybe tyre weight also has to be considered.
This one is a factory carrier which comes in the VX models
And this one is a Kaymar Carrier

Hi UDM,
The top one needs a lot of reinforcing in behind the pannel where you are going to bolt it too. If you havent got it in there already(only
grey inports from Japan normally have this) its hard to do and to do properly you will normally end up having to paint the back quarter(weld burns). They dont tell you all this till arter you have bought one. The bottom one is the way to go in my opinion. I have a twin and reckon its great. Price a oppisite lock one up against a kamar. You might be surprised.
Hope this helps
Matt

Sorry that kamar one is the one that attatches to the oem bumper. Heaps cheaper than a replacement bar. Thats the way to go if cost it a factor

Hi Have you thought of putting a false floor in the back? and keep the spare there? You also have room to keep
tools and other stuff that you need or not be seen. You also don't have the problem of lifting the wheel up or doing your back in. Just break it over the tail
gate. It's a lot cheaper too.

trust me , its a big tyre to just have it sitting inside... which is where it is now.

Hey there udm,
Like Matt said, the factory Toyota style option would need a lot of bracing, especially if you are running a 36in tyre and a steel rim! I know mine put a lot of load on the rear bar I'm currently using. It would be hard on the rear panel if you're doing lots of km's on corrugations.
You should also
check the clearance of the 36in tyre for the Kaymar carrier, the bar(box section) that the rim bolts to only slides out so far. I know that when I had one of these on my 100 it was a really tight fit with a 33in and needed some mods to fit the 35in. Might be different with the 80?. Seemed like a quality product, and only had minimal surface type rust on the reinforcing chassis sections when I removed it.
Cheers,
Ross.
