Simpson Desert

Heading to the Simpson last week of June/first week of July - west to east. Have a 3.0Lt Dual Cab Hilux with 115Lt Long Range tank. Also taking 40Lt spare fuel in jerry cans. Being a non turbo, I expect that I may use more than the average consumption provided by the Trek notes on this site (91Lt average volume). Thoughts?? Also, flagpoles for sand dune crest visibility - what length is recommended and where can these be sourced? Any other tips for the crossing from your experiences?
Cheers

Are your dates firm? My current planes leave Melbourne 21 June (depends on SWMBO work).

No firm dates when I will be in the simpson. It will be a "we'll see how we go" trip.

Hey Lewy,

You will have no probs with fuel & look on ebay for your flag.
We are crossing in September for the B/Ville races - should be like pitt st at that time :-)

Use common sense & Enjoy the trip

Lewy

Flagpoles of 3 metre height are about right.

I have a 'Wogpole'...the name in Victoria for a Squid fishing pole with no derogatory meaning. It is telescopic and was 6 metres in length. Some bits have broken off over the years. And you can use an old fishing rod, PVC pipe or whatever. No regulation on a flag either.

Channel 10 UHF on the Simpson is the go but there may be so much chatter that you would turn it down low or off

155lt fuel capacity @ 6+ lt/km usage should see you do some side trips and with fuel left over at Birdsville

Hi Lewy

We'll be in a party of 4 cars - 2 discos and 2 patrols - leaving Melbourne 20th June and aiming to be in Birdsville 2/3rd July.

I got my flag off ebay from a guy in Mt Barker but good 4wd shops have them.

See you on the track.

Hi Lewy
With 155 of Diesel, you will romp it through. You are only travelling at slow speeds, usually about 30 kilometres per hour in 3rd high, sometimes faster, sometimes slower. It is no race, so take your time, you will have a ball.
Like others have said above, channel 10 UHF is the channel to stick with. On the top of the larger dunes, put a call out for any other vehicles in the area. That way if you get a reply, you can ask what direction they are travelling and you will know what to expect if they are coming your way.
Pick a variety of track for the trip, you will be surprised the difference in the scenery. Make sure that you visit the Knolls. You will find ample wood for each night, don't go overboard with a bonfire, just big enough to keep you warm and your cooking.
Enjoy your Simpson trip, and I bet when you have finished you trip, you will be planning your next visit.

All the best and have a great trip.

Cheers

Stephen

Hi Lewy
I did the crossing in August last year in the same non turbo Hilux,
used about 95 lts diesel from Mt.Dare to Birbsvill. You will have no problems 155lts.The Hilux handled the trip with ease only had to use low range once on Big Red mist it the first time. (more fun that way ) Used high range on all other dunes and never mist one.Take your time once you have crossed you wish you were still out there. If you are on your own just be careful not to get caught between double dunes.Flagpoles are a must at least 3 mt. we used an old fishing rod and left it on the car the hole trip.Next time I would invest in fibreglass poll with a spring mount, when you see what the locals use it made my fishing rod look sick.Have a great trip.
Peter.
