Beddo,

Would be interesting to see how well a Canadian fridge works in Oz. I spent a couple of winters over there and being a Pom my biggest problem was trying to warm the beer up !!
They do get hot & humid Summers though so I can see the need for a fridge then.
www.koolatron.com has some info. Sounds like an interesting concept no moving parts other than the fan. Have you tested the current draw ? uses thermoelectric apparently: In 1834 Jean Peltier noted that when an electrical current is applied across the junction of two dissimilar metals, heat is removed from one of the metals and transferred to the other. This is the basis of thermoelectric refrigeration. Would be great if it turns out to be efficient, please post your findings when you have been able to try it out.

Jeff,

Have had a Koolatron for over 20 years, and had no problems with it. Not that it has done much work lately. As Mark said they use Peltier Element, so are fairly "hungry" on power. Model we have has a thermostat, so can control use a bit. Are a good travelling fridge, but there are better options for camping.

Would make a good beer fridge, in the shed, as they can be hooked up to a power supply, or battery charger. We froze some veges in ours, not by choice. Hooroo...

Might just take it away to the Kimberley and use it on the oad to cool the beere before we set camp then we can put them in the esky. Only have a Evacool esky which is very insulated though putting warm beere in them soaks up the ice so the Koolatron might do the trick and hopefully won't drain the battery as I will be driving.Cheers, Beddo

jeff,

Koolatron should be okay for that use, and they are not very heavy, when empty. Think battery drain is supposed to be around 4-5 amps, so alternator will handle it.

It will keep things quite cool, while travelling. Also, if it carks it on the way, you haven't lost anything, just have to drink all the beer before it gets hot.

Safe trip...

dont expect much more than say 20 degreees difference between ambient and interior of box. ie 30 ambient 10 inside, 35 ambient 15 inside, and as has per reply above they are VERY energy hungry. They cannot get stuff real cold either as the the colder they get the less eficient they become so expect the temperature difference to close eg ambient 25 inside 8 degrees. Just dont expect it to cool like a real fridge.

None the less have thought about making one for a lunch box while at work. One can use a sandard plastic insulated 6 can cooler box.Richard

Sounds good for cooling the beers anyway - will give in a work out in the Kimberley leaving in couple of days - hopefully won't drain batteries when I'm driving as mine is an auto and that would be painful - I will need plenty of beere then - as long as the alternator is charging alright.
PS. My brother works at the local tip and thats where we got it - works Ok except one latch is broken.Cheers, Beddo
