I have all my safety gear including UHF radio. I now need to get a radio to provide some news and radio-talk and maybe a little music during our stop times - dusk to dawn, 14 hours every day is a long time - in the deserts and remote tracks. I've seen a little SW radio on Ebay for an amazing $8 - made in China of course. Others I have seen for $100 and I'm not sure if either of them will get me what I want.
Any ideas anyone?

G-Day Van D,
I have one of those little beauty from E-Bay "Ultratek-UT-M9804"
and it works fantastic in many areas where I didn't have any reception what so ever before. It does have 8 short wave options and for the money I paid for it "fantastic little performer"
Hoppe this will help............Image Could Not Be Found

If you have a late model HF radio, (highly advisable for remote travel) they are capable of receiving shortwave radio from 250Khz to 30Mhz.

The ebay radios will be only as good as their antenna.

Don't fall into the trap of believing that the UHF is satisfactory to fill the bill of "safety gear". UHF is a great radio for convoy work, but seriously limited for anything else if you are really remote (repeaters notwithstanding of course).

Mike,
My mate bought a DE1103 and it arrived last week. I'm taking it bush for the next couple of weeks, so will compare it to the Barrett for listening to VKS.

Cheers

Thank you one and all.....you are a mine of experience and good advice. I have just ordered a DEGEN DE 1130. It should do the job. When I return in 12 weeks I shall report on its features. Thank you again....Van
