G'day Kero,

We did the same trip (weipa then upwards) in Jul 2006 - we wrote it up here

Have put up some recommendations on what we would do again, and what we wouldn't do, track files, fuel usage, "lost and found", and one of our crew (Sandy off this forum) put together a really cool slideshow to music (linked from the page above)

Hope it helps
Cheers,

Ivan

Kero and Bernie,
Don't know what rig you have and how confident you are, but I would reccomend a trip out to Pennifather while in Weipa and do the old telegrapf trackto the top.On the way back I would make the e ffort to goout to Cape Melville--a great spot.On the way to the top Vrylia beach is also a great camp spot. Was there last year and the roads and tracks are no worse than you would expect for 4 wd driving---have a great trip.

Just a word of caution about Weipa.

I know it was a long time ago now but we were given a lot of misinformation in Weipa. It was all designed to keep us in town longer so they could extract more $$$$ from us.

Weipa is probably worth a visit but I would do it on the way south.

Plan your trip well, Ron Moons book was very good, and be prepared to test any local information against what genuinley independant sources are telling you.

If you think something is worth checking out and someone says don't waste your time.........., well I would check it out for myself.

It is a great place, still ranks as probably our best family holiday yet. Despite the above caution given from our own experience.

Forgot to mention, we also had great difficulty getting accurate infromation on road conditions in Cairns.

We were there very early in the season, we were the second group to the tip that year. On our way south we found a lot of people were still being told that roads we had used on the way north were closed. The worst people for this were the National Parks and RACQ.

Ask other travellers. There should be a few south bound by the time you are heading north.

I would suggest you have a look at the Cape Yorker forum. I am a member there and the wealth of info found there on the Cape is awesome.
