I have just purchased a new Coleman Lantern, it has two mantles, and is slight smaller than the NorthStar.

I have assembled the unit strictly according to the insructions and now that it's alight, it "surges". It sort of alternates between a whitish glow to a more yellow colour, perhaps every one or two seconds. When the yellow flame is present, the flames extend out the top of the unit. I'm using Coleman Fuel.

I cam also hear dripping or gurgling of liquid when the lamp is turned on. Is all this normal? Is there a break-in period where everything settles down? Too much pressure? (I did the 30 strokes just liek the instructions).

Anty advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Hi ,
This normally occurs when there is not enough pressure in the tank. I normally pump 30 strokes into the lantern and then light it.
After it is lit I turn it to about half on the adjustment and then add roughly another 100 strokes. This will most likely solve your issue.

cheers

Brett.

At least it improved the situation a fair bit, however now that it's running better the light intensity continues to fluctate quite a bit, once again every 1-2 seconds, it dims for a little bit and then goes back to normal. It's quite disconcerting with the light fluctuating so much. Am I expecting too much, or is this one of the "charms" of liquid fuel lanterns?

Is this functioning normally, or is there something else I should do?

Thanking you all in advance.

Cheers

It sounds as if the lamp is faulty - I suggest you return it, Coleman are very good in this regard.

TRy turning the brightness control knob quickly off and fully on --do this about 5-10 times while the lantern is lit. It is a self cleaning action on the jets and may fix your problem.

Dont know about the new ones but we used the old Tilley lamps for about 5 years.
The usual reason for flaring was either dirty fuel or blocked jets or in our case quite often both.
