Hi All - Can anyone tell me if getting around Magnetic Island is difficult without a car. Thinking of leaving the 4by on the mainland.

Cheers

When we were there a few years ago there was a bus service. I just now typed it into google--magnetic island buses--and up came the bus and ferry timetable. Enjoy the island , I liked it.

Thanks for that - just wondering if there are any 'off the beaten track' places I may not be able to get to.
Cheers

One of the favourite beaches is a fair walk from the bitumen. There is a good drive up to the other end of the island to the old quarantine station.

Have a look at http://http://tinyurl.com/56693r You can only drive the local vehicles on the thick line road. I have spent one day travelling by bus and another one driving a Moke. If I go across again I will certainly be taking my own vehicle.

There are a few options - the bus as mentioned - get your combined ferry and bus ticket, it's cheaper - the bus is a hop on and hop off all day ticket.

The second option is the Mini Moke. Cost $90 5 years ago.

The third option is motor scooters. They are only 50 cc models so a car license is all that is required. Forget the price.

With all these options you are confined to the sealed roads. If you wish to venture further you have to take your own transport. There are plenty car ferry trips each day. Take your tent and spend a day or two.

If you are going for that length of time I reckon that you will like to see some of the other 80% of the island so you will need something that can go off the bitumen. Also if you want your own self drive transport taking your vehicle will be much cheapre.

The entire road system totals about 70 km.

You can hire 50cc scooters for FA and safely travel the Island.

It's one of the only places on the planet that I would ride a motorised cycle.

My suggeston...get the ferry and hire a scooter or two, you'll save plenty and have some fun.

Jim.

We hopped on and off the bus and walked up to the WW11 lookouts/gun emplacements as well. I suspect that in addition to the other options mentioned you could probably hire pushbikes.
