Hi Terry,
The telegraph track follows the coast, basically, from
Israelite Bay thru to the
SA border, but some parts are impassible or heavily overgrown. Basically, you do a beach run for about 90km from east of Israelite to the cliffs (the actual track here is overgrown in
places and passes thru salt lakes in other
places, hence the beach run), then follow the track above the cliffs through to south of
Caiguna. East, beyond Baxter's memorial, the track is overgrown or blown out in sand. You need to get onto the highway from
Caiguna to Cocklebiddy or the Eyre turnoff, then head south again to the track. The track is non-existent for about 15km east and west of Eyre (sand and overgrown), but the later inland telegraph track is good from Burnabbie to Madura, then there are tracks taking one thru to the Eucla.
Some have done the track east of Israelite thru to Wattle
Camp, but it's pretty rough on the paintwork.
Drop me a line on gezza90 (at) amnet (dot) net (dot) au; I have more detailed info of the area incl tracks and waypoints. Lots of good stuff to see north and south of Israelite, plus along the cliffs.
Cheers,
Gerry
