Has anyone any idea's how to stop the mattress in the camper trailers from getting wet if you have to pack up in the rain. I have a trakshak with an iner spring mattress, and it gets very damp if we have packed up in the wet, any info appreciated

Hi Brenton W,
We had same problem when we had CT and overcome it simply by placing it in a plastic bag (from any mattress store) same as in hospitals. Left it like that permanently and never had the worry again. Hope this will help.

You can get, from
places like Spotlight, vinyl, elastised matress covers that just slip over the matress. We just use a 6'x8' blue poly tarp. Got it at the Reject
Shop for the princely sum of $1.00. Works great.

Hi,
We have a small tarp which we put on top of the bed when we pack up. So far so good.
Cheers,
Greg

You could buy a T Van, tent does't fold on top of the bed!

G'day Brenton,
We have an inner-spring mattress in our Aussie Traveller RT camper. A large tarp goes around the mattress, under and over when travelling, when setting
camp this is then rolled back along the top bottom and side to keep the bedding off the canvas. Works for us.
Cheers,
Wayne.

Blue tarp here too.
If still wet when travelling try to stop a little earlier than usual to give the mattress an airing.
If pulling into
home, open it up for a few days in the front yard.

Bit more expensive than a blue tarp but we bought a plastic mattress cover from a bed
shop - goes over bedding as
well as we have a Swagman & bed can stay made up. Always carry spare sheets & blanket in zipped plastic bag in case of real disasters. Cheers Heather

Clear plastic sheeting off the roll, at Bunnings - works for us. Most important when you get
home though to remove it and air the mattress. We have met people in our travels (people who spend a lot of time on the road) that mould can attack the mattress from the underside - seems to be encouraged by the cold metal floor.

The cold metal floor is a problem. Does anybody have any ideas for this. Had wondered about some thin polystyrene underneath

Have not needed to insulate ours yet but if so, I'd start at those 'cheap as chips' type
places - yoga mats and the like can be very cheap for the coverage offered - I have used them for other cushioning type applications (usually by stealing one from the lady of the expeditions :-o).

Clarke Rubber sell the proper matting to go under the mattress to prevent mould forming, not cheap at $95 per linear metre. Have heard some people use double thickness shadecloth.
Cheers Krakka.

Shade cloth is a cheap alternative under mattress to stop mould. Say in a caravan mag recently a more expensive under mattress option

Brenton, I use a painters sheet from Bunnings. Folds out and covers the matress and they are cheap. Bought 3 sheets for about $5.00 in case they get torn.
Works a treat for me.

we also put a tarp over the whole bed as packing up, if you hang it off the side of the bed a bit it stops the sand landing on the bed.

If you have the velcro-on wall for the "annex" then use it to cover both matteresses before dropping the tent.

Our camper has a tarp built in, zipped at one side of the bed (not to the mattress at all). You just roll it up to set the bed up and pull it back over when packing up. It works really
well, only time mattress got wet was during the watering in period for the canvas. (or camper is an All Terrain). It's a god size so covers all the sleeping gear etc.
Otherwise when we were in the market for a camper trailer I saw that the Complete
Campsite people have an actual canvas "suitcase" for theirs - the whole mattress sits in this canvas "bag", you unzip the top around 3 sides from memory and roll it to one side (like we do with the All Terrain plastic tarp thing).
Providing their mattress dimensions are similar to yours it could
well be worth inquiring as to the cost and weather they sell them separately. I think it's a fantastic (if not probably expensive) idea.

I had the idea of a plastic bag as
well (like the removal ones) but hubby tends to be against those, he reckons it would lead to mould etc as the mattress can't breathe.

G'day Brenton,
There are a lot of variations on the same theme. I hope you find one that suits your particular application.
Thanks for thanks.
Cheers,
Wayne.

No doubt all these solutions work, but I prefer to put a silver tarp over the lot. No wet beds , no bird poo & other stains, always
cooler, & never pack up with wet canvas. Takes 5 min with a
handful of oco straps... dead easy.....oldbaz.
