billytwo... I have just sold my D40 auto 2.5 diesel(5000kms )
Couldn,t get better than 13lt/100km empty at 95kmh careful country driving.
Google Complaints Corner (Australia) for forums on D40's.
I think you will reconsider. Good luck .

billytwo.... Also look up thread 5786 ,I started on this forum re Navara fuel consumption and replies. (around 21 May I think)
I now have a new Hilux 3lt diesel.
Also was impressed with the Ford Ranger 3lt diesel ,and all the options, clearance, side airbags ,etc ,in the standard model.

What is its legal towing capacity as many 20+ vans are over 2.5 tonne and are too heavy for quite a few vehicles

Maximum tow weight - 3,000 kg
Maximum ball weight - 300 kg

The vehicle hand book also includes a range of maximum vehicle loadings for different tow ball weights where all other manufacturers just leave it to you to work it out for yourself.

A guy here at work who recently left, bought one to tow his newly purchased dingo, trailer and all the trimmings which weighs around 2t. He popped in the other day and was complaining bitterly about his consumption. 25/100. He should have kept his duel fuel GQ.

Hi Billy

We bought a Navarra specifically to tow a fifth wheeler, admittedly we have only done the one trip so far from Toowoomba to Brisbane so cant really comment on fuel usage for the fifth wheeler. The Navarra did this job very well.

We also use it to tow our Pioneer Camper, generally get abround 10 - 11 lt/100km on the bitumen but that is travelling at the speed limit.

Regards
Rocky

like others have said...bad fuel economy without towing...I would steer clear....get the D22....its a 3lt and fuel economy is 10lt around toen and towing is anywhere between 10 - 14 Lt/100km

i wouldnt buy one.....

I have the manual and find it a great tow vehicle, smooth comfortable and economical. Towing the camper and fully loaded, if pushed the fuel consumption does go up a lot, which you have to expect due to the high power output of these engines.
People seem to relate fuel economy/consumption to the size of the engine or number of cylinders. It should be related to the power output, yes the 3.0lt gets better fuel economy than the 2.5lt but it also has less power. You read people saying that there old 6cyl got better economy, again less power. The modern engine is very fuel efficient, if one make of vehicle uses less than another check power output as it will most likely be less. Simply, to get more power pour in more fuel.
Thats my take on it anyway.

Thanks to all you kind people who have given input to my question. I suppose I was thinking that the weight would be a problem and the majority or replies confirm that, and I also agree that power to weight ratio is critical in a towing vehicle. I think I will be sticking with my GU 4.2 diesel patrol, oldie but a goodie..

First thing to do (which I didnt and it cost me) is buy the van before the tow vehicle. Then u can get a vehicle to suit the van which is what u r going to live in and is the most important.
Then look at the Compliance plate and buy a vehicle which is rated higher than the ATM on the plate. Dont let a salesman say " she'll be right, just dont fill the water tanks"
If the vans ATM is higher than the tow vehicles legal towing capacity its illegal whether its full loaded or not.

Billytwo

I have a D40 auto and it tows my 2 tonne van extremely well.

I have a friend who tows a 23' Future systems van with a Pathfinder (same mechanicals as the D40) He previously used a 3.0L Patrol to tow with, his experience is that the Pathfinder tows better than the Patrol did. The 3.0L model out performs your old 4.2 clunker.

Just got the fuel book out to do the figuring. During two periods of non towing of around 3,000 km Mine achieved around 11.1 ltr/100km.

The current trip we have travelled 1360 km of which 900 km was towing. We have averaged 13.8 ltr/100km. The van is a pop-top with around 2,000 kg weight. The vehicle has only travelled around 13,000 km and I have not done a towing trip that has gone over two tanks full to get an accurate towing consumption. However it is looking to be around the same fuel performance of my previous Disco TD5.

Have been following comments on D40 navara. I would like to know if they are capable of towing 2500kg to 3000kg and how they perform with these weights. Looking forward to comments and any advise.

Have recently purchased D40 auto 2.5 turbo. Towing an offroad coromal silouette approx 1.5 t. Has 4000k on the clock and when towing if pushing speed to 120kmh uses 16-18 per 100 using cruise control. If do not use crusie 13-15 per 100. In the last 2 weeks i fitted a genuine snorkel to the car, it is unbelievable the difference it has made. The motor now feels unrestricted and fuel econ has increased by at least 1-1.5 ltrs per 100.
Around town it uses 12ltrs when on the open road empty i am getting 11-12 at 110kmh
The biggest complaint i have is the suspension, the rear end drops severly with the coromal on the back or any load.
I am having fitted a TJM suspension kit next week and will follow up once this is done.

I have a D40 deisel manual. Working hard all day with loaded car weight @2600kg (Builder) also tow the trailer 2 times a week with 1.5ton on it. Plenty of power but a little hard to get used to the first gear start when towing, need to give it 1500-200revs to realy shoot off.
When driving it is a dream. Economy car only loaded @13l/100km towing @16-17L/100kg driving easy. Has done 14,000km.
Very happy with it but it does tend to feel every kg you put on it.
My dad has the 3L D22 deisel manual (2005 mod)towing a fifth wheeler of 1.8 ton. With the Dtronic chip, 2.5in exhaust and snorkel he gets 14-15L/100km, you can not argue with that.. With the ute only he gets 9-9.5L/100km.
Seems the old 3L D22 is the pick.
