Paul & Debbie
After lurking this site for a while, and weighing up our needs for both city and country travelling around, we have now acquired a new model Kluger. Want to take it through the
Barrington Tops next weekend for a
test run of how 'off road' it can be.
Not looking for really rough stuff, and have read the directories etc. The road
Gloucester to
Scone, via Polblue/ Moonan Flat is the one we are targetting. "Moderate" road apparently??
Is this a do-able start to the world of off roading without too much fallout for us? Any tricky bits?

You Kluger will be fine on that road, you could do it in a normal
sedan.

Only time you would need 4wd on that road was if it was snowing....and it would probably be closed anyhow..

I think some of the tracks you want to go to will be closed now ... It closes 1 June till about September i believe ( someone will correct me i am sure )
Might be better off going down the souther end .... telegherry river with a GPS you can find some 4x4 tracks , but be warned a lot of the 4x4 tracks are over grown and you WILL get bush pin stripes....

Paul & Debbie, there's some great camping up there, especially on the
Gloucester side, if you have camping in mind. Some great
places right on the river. You won't have any trouble. The road can get chopped up after rain up high, but a great drive, especially if there is a bit of snow about. Take your time and enjoy. It's a great short trek to christen the new Kluger.
Have fun.

A phone call to
Gloucester visitor info centre will advise you of any road closures.

Paul & debbie
despite what has been said above I think the most important thing for you to appreciate is the difference between "off-road" and dirt road. Your Kluger will comfortably handle most dirt roads - unless they have been chewed up and badly corrugated. The road you are talking about is a
well maintained dirt road and you should have no problems. it is subject to occasional snow falls or heavy rain but the authorities will close it immediately that happens. It is a fabulous drive and I am sure you will enjoy it. Personally I prefer to travel it east to west because the
views as you come down on the western side are spectacular. Enjoy!!!

agree with th "go east>west post if you go the top road. Beaut
views dropping down to Moonan Flat etc.
You can do it in a Commodore bit I'd go along with the suggestion of ringing the tourist info and
check for closures.
There are plenty of other options around there though. Go through Maitland, Paterson, Gresford and into the
State Forest. Lower altitudes and no snow. Beautiful area. You can follow the road around to Salisbury and Dungog via Barrington House and numerous
camp spots. Pretty straighforward tracks although can be fairly narrow
