Suitable GPS

Hi All,
I would appreciate some advice regarding GPS Purchase.

I have spent the day at the Brisbane Caravan and Camping Show chasing a suitable GPS system.

My question is... Is it worth spending $1000 on a Magellan Crossover (to get the Outdoor Adventure mode extras and other features) or not.

We like to travel in the outback so as much detail as possible is important to us.

There are the lesser Maestro models to consider, obviously with fewer features.

Also, Magellan uses USA Navtec mapping. How does this compare with other brands that use WhereIs mapping.
There are plenty of brands to pick from.

I would really appreciate any information experienced people might like to offer.

Thankyou.
Cheers,
Max

From what I have used around here it seems that Garmin gives the most usefull gear, loaded with City Navigator 8, Tracks 4T, and Shonky maps ( it has all th dirt tracks right up thru th centre) we went to Finke last year and were very impressed with the detail of the outback tracks.
Have also used Tom Tom and Navman.
Went to WA last August and it proved it's self again.
Very happy . Cheers Des.
