Hi there,

I am after some opinions on camper trailers. After having a weekend away with our 4x4 club and being the only ones there using a tent I have decided i want a trailer. Im not wanting to spend a fortune and happy to buy a 2nd hand one. I have no idea of the different makes and models and would love to hear any feedback.

Thanks,
Hayley

There is a user on here called BREW who is selling his off road Spirit camper trailer, I think he want about $7000.00

Very good trailer with very little use, I think it's about 2 years old.

Have a look at these two web site.

Yep it's regrettably up for sale. Anyone wanting a tough trailer with very little use will get a bargain :) Will take $6500 from EO people.

Hi. I did the big search not long ago and there are heaps on the market and at very resonable prices as well. It pays to do a lot of research on the web to find out what suits you. There are so many options available with price tags to match. Just look at the adds in your local newspaper for a start, there are four good options in the Cairns post this weekend. If you have a ute you could consider the option I went for, the slide off camper. I now have my camp on the back of the ute and can still tow the tinny for a fish. Price wise in the camper trailer option you will get somthing reasonable for $3500 to $5000. Best of luck. Regards Tony.

G'day Hayley,

just out of curiosity...apart from being the only ones using a tent on that trip, what has made you think that perhaps a camper trailer would be better than a tent? Did a tent suit you well before or perhaps the tent you have was not "suitable" for the trip?

I guess Im thinking a Camper might be an easier option. We have a very large tent and it takes ages to put up. Just watching everyone else setting up their campers with such ease.

Umm. We are thinking of going back the other way. Have had a super bullet proof off road model from Cape York Trailers. The all hot dipped galv model before they went all luxurious. Can't speak highly enough of its strength. But that comes with weight. I think the first concession we might make to fuel prices is getting rid of the trailer and roofrack and designing everything to fit inside the mighty 60 series Toyo.

Hi Hayley,

There are a lot of different styles, horses for courses. If you would like to email me with a rough idea of what you are looking for, I can help you with some info. I just bought a new camper 3 months ago after spending 8 months researching before hand.
my email is - jason@thewellnessvision.com
The only reason I suggest email is that there is a lot of traffic on this site :-)

Cheers

HI , may i suggest you be a little more specific ....

Ie -- do you have one kid - or a tribe of kids ......

where you camp --- can a soft roader get in or is it strictly 4x4 - 2 inch ( min lift) snorkel required entry

i think these are 2 very important questions as you may not be able to get a trailer into some places where you camp -- or you may even be able to UPGRADE to a pop top caravan if its all easy access stuff as $7000 for a trailer is only 3 k short of a decent pop top van ...

Ok, well so far it's only myself, hubby and one child. I dont think we want anything for extreme off roading...not yet anyway. Just something fairly basic so we can get used to it. Something that can handle some gentle offroad. Would probably upgrade to something more suitable for offroad down the track but for now just something basic as I said. And we are certain we dont want a pop top van. We only have a smallish 4x4 so not wanting to tow anything too big.

Hi Hayley,
We are trying to sell our camper trailer. It is an Aussie Swag 4x4 offroad, with hard floor, QS mattress, water tank, kitchen etc. We now have three kids and are looking to upgrade to a Jayco expanda.

The aussie swag was about $25K new and we are hoping to get somewhere in the area of $7500 for it.

If you would like more info please email me at knightchiro@bigpond.com

I am new to this site so not sure if I will be able to find my way back to the correct page - email is probaby safer.

If you are at all interested I will get the proper details from hubby.
Cheers
Michelle

HI Hayley.
Check out this web site of manufacturers:Some are on northside eg Brendale, Caboolture etc

http://www.campertrailers.org/manufacturers.htm

I'm on the northside but like you are still considering what to buy.
But we are wanting a hardfloor one not a softfloor,
Cheers,
Glen

Hi

Suggest you hire one for a weekend or two before you buy. In that way you can work out what you like/dislike and then you will hopefully be in a better position to make an informed decision.

We did that with Challenge C/Ts.

Cheers.

Yep. Bought an ex-hire unit from the Challenge guys in Sydney.

Pretty happy so far, although the 6 ft annex is bit small. We have plans to a 8 ft one eventually.

All up a nice tidy C/T.

bockstar1- We did the same- bought an ex hire one from Perth. Very happy with it. We did get a bit of dust in, around the tailgate, last time out though. When I had a good look, the tailgate catch doesn't seem to be engaging properly at the top. What is yours like? Do you get any dust in when going over corrugated/dusty roads? Have you ever had to adjust the tailgate? Mine needs a new strut on the tailgate(which had been ordered) but I don't know if this will make a difference.Ta, doc.

Re. Tailgate. Yes, I guess the hinge could become a weakpoint over time. Our unit is around 2 years old and it seems pretty solild.

In terms of dusty roads, we've done a couple roads but no great long stretches.

Never had to adjust the tailgate strut. I will probably have it looked at when I get the thing re. sprayed. This will be after our Red Centre oddessy in July.

Cheers.

Can you easily carry all the gear required in your car with your set up at the moment?
I'm looking at it this way:
If you find that you really need extra space (ie a trailer) so that you can take all the stuff you want to, then seriously look at trailers like you are. But beware, once you get a trailer it's very easy to pack more than you really need.
But if your only gripe is the set up time, then perhaps a much better option would be looking at a better tent (like OzTent) which is expensive as far as tents go (around $1000) but much cheaper than a trailer and very quick to set up, it also offers you the flexibility to camp in places where you can't normally get a trailer into.

We have a couple of kids, and if you're camping often or doing really long trips then the convenience of a camper is definitely great, you can cook under cover, and a good model is pretty quick to set up for overnight stays.
We are actually settling down now and not traveling as often, and no more long driving holidays now, so we're going in the opposite direction to you. We've downgraded the car and are selling the camper. I imagine we'll probably end up buying a decent tent for going away on short trips during the school holidays and the like, and perhaps a trailer or roof rack for extra gear if we really need to. Otherwise it may be just as easy to hire a camper since we're not likely to be doing it that often.

Not sure where you are, but for a really sturdy and easy to set up off road camper I'd highly recommend the All Terrain Camper Trailer (NSW). We started off in the back of a ute, then had a really basic home made box trailer camper, then an Adventure Camper, and after that found our ideal trailer in the All Terrain. There are certainly heaps out there, depending on your budget and travelling style there is bound to be something to suit. Campers Org site is really good. Otherwise get out to a camping show if you can.
