Plenty Highway Feedback

I'm planning to drive the Plenty Hwy to Alice from Qld. If we leave from Winton where is the first stop for non-camping accommodation? We plan to stop at Gemtree but that is too far, is there any accommodation in the middle now that Tobermory is (apparently?) closed?

Hi gvn,

Boulia would be your first stop at 360km then Jervois is about 220km west of the border & should have accom. We are doing the same in about 3 weeks. Have driven the Plenty a few times. We bush camped one time (a bit isolated though). This time we are traveling with friends & Camper Trailers.

Cheers & Happy Travels

The Boulia CVP is ok but is a simple afair, the town swimming pool is great.

The bush camp at Jervos is as about as good as it gets between Boulia and Gemtree, basicly bush with a fence.

Hi gvn,

Yes, Tobermory closed on 30 Nov 2007. As far as I'm aware, there is no non-camping accomodation available between Boulia and Gemtree.

In Boulia, you could call the pub and book a room and Gemtree have cabins.

We travelled Dec 2007. We did Gemtree to Boulia in 10 hours. Some sections of the hwy both sides of the boarder were in very good condition.

You may need to to consider going the longer way around to Alice.

gvn,

I don't think that you can get accommodation at Jervois Station but you could phone them to check. The number is 08 89566307 or email jervoisstation@bigpond.com

I'm doubtful that they do though as I can see no mention of it anywhere.

Other than that, it's Boulia to Gemtree and no other alternatives

As far as I know, Jervois is still the go, but Tobermory Station is no longer the go.
It's a pity, it's a nice spot and the people there, are terrific. Not sure why, but that's the owners choice.

Cheers mate

Just did the Plenty, was no worries. Road was good at Qld end, some bitumen sections help with the boredom. Couple of road trains, lots of grey nomads with caravans! Camped at Jervois, nice little red dust campground with firepits. Tobermorey closed because they were sick of the constant stream of people. (cheaper fuel there made them very busy?!) !! Fuel was obscene, and it goes up in price every week, apparently. (Diesel in Alice is $1.97.)
