With the new import changes having taken effect in May 2003 link text, I was wondering what would happen to the insurance premiums, spare parts and availability, and general outcome to Surfs in Australia in response to these changes.
I was keen to import a 3.0ltrTD Surf but now thats bleep tered and impossible unless I live in Japan for a year and bring the vehicle back with me - Fat Chance!
Although not as grunty, I will now start from scratch looking for a vehicle either pre 1988 model or buy an already imported Surf. Will the 2.4ltr TD be just as satisfying?
In my opinion, the importing change is a bad move....

Hi Peter
There should 3.0L Surfs from 99 on at least they were built in Japan then. I do not know how your used import system works, but I thought it would still be a viable option or is the tax outrageous? They have been on the market in NZ both imported and NZ new for some years You could look at buying a 2.4 powered one and fitting the 3.0 engine The big engine is a realy nice unit.

Yeah I really want a 3.0ltr TD but without the engine transfer costs. You could get them before but now in Aust., your not allowed to thanks to this new (but crappy)Import regulation - I cant even get one from NZ!

Thanks Truckster for the advice.
I have driven the 1991-2 2.4ltr TD and the 1993-4 3.0ltr TD and prefer the latter. BUT because I cant import that model anymore(which would have costed about AUD$11000), which is my budget, I have to be happy with the 2.4ltr which is good 4WD anyhow!
My main worry is if I get a 1991-4 Surf, will there be ample spare parts 5 years or so down the track since they have made it very expensive to import them into Australia now?
Will existing owners still be able to easily get parts or will it become to expensive?
Will the purchasing price of Surfs already in Australia rise or fall due to the change to importing regulations?
I just wish I had the money before May to buy + import a 1993-4 Surf....... : (

Pete
Talking to NZI, they reckon it is one of the most targetted vehicle by car thief in NZ. High popularity in NZ means you should be able to still get parts from a Kiwi mate at worst.
The 3 ltr has the same motor as a Prado. Should make a better buy. Love the electric rear window for long goods/surfboards.
Cheers

Peter.
Call some insurance companies too, that will give you an idea as
well...
Grey Imports aint cheap to insure.
Most in interchangeable with Lux's anyway so the only thin you will have problems gettin are Surf Badges...
