How does everyone carry their gas bottles (either 4.5Kg or 9Kg) safely on a roof rack? I think carrying them inside is very risky (especially on the corrugated CSR next month). I've heard some put them in a milk crate, but think these might self destruct on the corrugations.

Totally agree with using a milk crate - did you ever play with these as a kid?? we built jumps from them - threw them around - used and abused - could never break them

definitely the better way to transport a gas bottle

There may be exceptions, but I was always of the understanding that the milk crates were actually owned by the various milk distribution/processing companies and that it was illegal to use them for anything other than which they were designed. Have read that it would actually amount to a Larceny offence by such users. Just for info.

"Milk Crate", a generic term for a plastic storage box. Readily available from your local Bunnings etc...

If they pursued the line of larceny for possesion of MIlk Crates they would have to build new prisons to accomodate all the owners. LOL

Opposite Lock sell Gas Botle Holders that bolt to a roof Rack.

Gas Bottle Holder

I am pretty sure Rhine make a similar thing.

OL gas bottle holders only suit certain models of bottles. I took my 4.5kg bottle in to try it out and it was too fat to fit in the holder.

I think you may find that there is a legal limit as to the size of gas bottle allowed on the roof. Weren't roof mounted LPG tanks outlawed?

chris,
The gas bottle carries a warning about leaving them in the sun for prolonged periods of time, I'm sure they only print it there to cover themselves when they do explode.

However they don't give the same warning when storing gas bottles in the shade, and yes it will get very hot up on the roof rack, not to mention add weight, increase drag and bulk.

Why not transport it (turned off) inside the vehicle as I do, and as *ALL* Mobile Homes do also.

Most Caravans and Camper Trailers have the Gas Bottles on the drawbar and this is usually in the sun so this must have been determined as a safe place to have them.

I believe the Gas Bottles in Motor Homes are in enclosures which are vented to the outside.

I don't think there is a case of a Gas Bottle exploding while being in the sun.
Cheers
Dick
