Hi everyone,
My sister is looking at a 2001 tata Safari with65k on the clock for $13K.
Did a search and the only person who seems to own/owned one in 2002 was in a post by "Viking" I know they are indian company which has acquired land Rover.
Is anyone able to give an opinion based on experience or first hand knowledge. Most of the use will be country roads with a fair amount of dirt road work.Looks a nice vehicle, sounds ok -am aware of the potential parts problem. They are seeking a replacement for the 90 model Jack which has faithfully provided 400,000 of more or less problem free motoring. However funds are now limited to the budget suggested above.
Thanks,
Mary

What is she looking for...single/dual cab...2 or 4 WD.....what is it's purpose...what does she hope to do/ what are ser expectations.

For example Nissan navara dual cab 4x4 with the 3litre is a great buy which will do most what you want...lot of them around.

Sometimes it pays to go that extra bit or wait a little till you can.

For $13000.00 you can buy a 2001 Jack with say maybe 100000ks and as you said they will do 400000ks. Their is heaps on carsales.com au. If you really want the Tata offer $10000.00 no more as you will have a hard time selling it in the future.
I brought a 98 Jack with 101000ks and in 12 months have only done routine services plus changed all fluids. Love it a lot more refined than my old 91 swb.

I must agree with madfisher, go for another Jack. I got a 2000
V6 auto with only 80k for $14k. Been faultless. I believe the Tata
run Peugeot diesel motors which are fine but not sure of the build quality of the rest of it. In 5 years you wont be able to give it away. Perhaps someone may have better personal experience.
cheers...oldbaz.

Baz the longer I have the 3.5 the more I love it. Just changed to 10/30 oil to see if the economy improves further. Drove swmbo nh Paj today and the 3l v6 feels slow and harsh compared to the Jack. Hope she does not read this lol.

Pete, you & I could form a mutual admiration society on Jacks &
really give the Toysann lot the poos. Not sure of the viscosity, I
think my trusty mechanic puts Magnatec in it. Being a Jack I dont
need to add oil between changes do I?. Better get off or I will be accused of thread hijacking, although I've had another go at
steering Mary off Tatas...cheers...oldbaz.

Baz my mate use to be the service manager for a gmh dealer, and he put me on to this oil still castrol and he runs in in his own Jack. GTX professional10/30. 20l $99.00. Took it to my Mechanic. I will let you know if any measurable improvement.
Hope we have convinced Mary a Tata is not a good idea.

I know a mechanic who made his fortune on fixing Ladas. He is now specialising in Tatas. They are putting his kids through private school. He would strongly recommend you buy one. LOL.

Mary, I dont want to rain on your parade, but a quick hunt around the net tells me one thing...dont buy it. At least not at that price.
A very good dual cab with 112k can be had for $4k..99 model.
A review of the Safari said..>very cheap & drives like it too.
Many more better cars around for that $$...oldbaz.

Redbook Tata price <--- If she really wants it, $13k is nearly double what it's worth.

Hi Havent driven a ute version of TATA's but have several years experience of driving Tata buses.
If they are anything to go by I wouldnt touch one with a 40ft bargepole with boxing gloves on.
They were supposed to be Indian Mercedes motors and boxes but when u got into them they were vastly different and inferior.
The metal used seemd to be poor and we were forever replacing stuff like handbrake rachets as the teeth just chewed off them. The company had 4 of them and ended up cannabalising one to keep the other 3 going. They were uncomfortable, extremely noisy and hot to drive.
THe motors seemed to go good (when they were going that is) but after that I wouldnt recommend the make at all.
You could try ringing Sunbus on the Sunshine Coast for an opinion on Tata's, they run al lot of newer ones than we had.
There is a ute running around here on Bribie but dont know its history at all.

Mary just be aware the diesel Jack post 98 had issues, but the v6s are very reliable as was the earlier 3.1 diesel. Glad to be of help and I hope your sister finds a good one. Have a look at carsales or trading post.

Hi ,
Diesel engine is a Peugot copy, gear box is Spicer transfer case is Borgwarner and diffs are Dana's , if you get a good one reliability is great but some parts are dear (clutch kit $1500) .
Asking price is way to dear check redbook.com.au
Corperation I worked for had a 2001 twincab 4x4 diesel with 55000 kms trade value was about $3-4000
did you know Tata normally make trains (Tata locomotive Company)

have fun
Andy
