In the last month I have scrunched the alloy side steps of the GQ on both side and decided to renew them. Did not even bother to look at wreckers or Ebay for that matter.

Went down to local rural hardware store and found some C-channel and had it cut to size. Removed old alloy steps, bent the sidestep frame straight(sort of) and fitted the C-channel. I was even able to use the rubber endcovers though a bit of inventive cutting to make them fit was needed.

Total cost: Couple of hours work and $28 for the C-channel and new bolts and nuts

Nice tidy job Willem.

I make all my mods on the car and just in the process of building a steel roof rack. I think Ive over engineered it though. It weighs three times what I intend to carry...hahaha.

Theres a lot of satisfaction building your own gear and saving a fortune as well.

Cheers......Lionel.

Hi Willem

They look better than bought ones, its a good to do your own repairs, and the satisfaction you get from making things work.

Cheers

No denying that is one good job and something to be proud of. Sometimes it does pay to have a look around for alternatives before forking out the big bucks.

Kind regards

U R A rumour-monger.

I was hoping the Willem acacia breeze side-steps might increase the value of the ol' truck enough for me to be able to afford the 200.

Cheers
Andrew happily off the rags.

I thought you would have heard them from your place.

I can't say it was a pleasant 14,000km from a rubber perspective. There are rumoured to be photos extant of me with four tyres off the rims at one "sitting" - enough said. Three spare tubes was not enough -ughgh, and one Super Traction was written off (my initial sidewall repair was trashed further).

If you didn't hear the tyres, I am surprised you didn't hear me out in the desert cussing with the six or was it seventh repair...

Now, on a serious subject, surely it is time we started lobbying for some serious camel culling?

Oh dear....and here's me with one MRF puncture in 30,000k and a whole lot more X country stuff. What were you doing?????

Better come to me for some lessons,eh?

Still, you would have done a lot worse in that country with your favourite brand.

I kinda like the noise. It comes up to a crescendo that sounds like when all the 747 engines get in to tune in the jetstream....LOL

I'll stay with the MRF's BTW you can buy MRF radials too. THen you can run them on steel rims and take twice as long the repair a puncture.........hahahaha

Cheers

Still, you would have done a lot worse in that country with your favourite brand... nup.

I've done that sort of country a plenty in the STTs - perhaps not needing as low pressures though.

There was significant X-country stuff including burnt gidgee (4 of the punctures) and some "grader" tracks in the GVD in there.

The wrecked MRF was nasty rock in the sidewall at speed (well 40 clicks) - didn't see it until I was on it.

That why I suggested lessons

Excellent job there young Willem.

I looked at the first pic and wondered what the bl00dy hell you were on about. Very nice job.

I've bent my side steps up and am thinking about making some steel step/sliders for mine.

For $28 bucks I wouldn't be complaining either

Take it easy

Cheers Luke
