Towing my caravan across the Tanami rd last week, I was surprised (this being my first trip in this part of the world) to find at
the Granites mines that I had mobile phone coverage. I know this phenomenom is down to the
mine being there, but has anyone told Telstra that it is possible to provide a service in remote areas. We lost coverage at Alice and did not get it back until nearer
Halls Creek apart from the above.
So one would assume that if Telstra can provide service out there then why not all over. I saw no shortage of communications towers on the way across.

The
mine probably subsidised the tower for its own convenience?

They need a tower every 25ish km for mobile phones to work...
Then they need the comms equipment on the top for a mobile cell...
and to pay for all that, they would need a hell of a lot more traffic than you see on the Tanami - or a very big stick from the gov't

Newmont own Granites & Groundrush up the road. Full Telstra mobile signal right throughout the
mine and all of their other mines. Spent some time out at Jundee in WA installing their new land_line IP phone system and have done some work remotely on the Tanami system as they are all networked together.

Weve just had Next G installed at the Golden Grove minesite
- finally Next G outperforms GSM (because the tower is right there)

Jim,
Are you using Next G or GSM ?
Do you have an external aerial ?

Redeye,
Its a next G with external car aerial. Mind you the signal we got did not last long. We find (I think) that when the signal in the area is on the weak side the external aerial helps, altho I am not sure to what extent.

Now Im no expert when it comes to mobile phones , but ,,, all those towers that you see every 50klm on the Strezleckie - Oodnaddatta - and the Tanami are phone towers , just NOT mobile phone ,they are microwave dishes to send from 1 tower to the next at an average distance of 50klm ,, the reason u and I get mobile coverage at
places like Granites
mine is because the '
mine' pays to have a tower with mobile to the land line to the microwave ,,, someone from Telstra can probably explain it better ,,,

GDay Hairy, and yes you are right. Anything can be done at a price. When I get my mobile bill I sometimes think that I am paying that "get coverage anywhere price."
