We are planning a trip from Adelaide up through NT, over to WA and down to SA back home again. Leaving on 23 July for a 6 months. We'll be travelling with our Jayco Eagle and Toyota Hilux plus two little ones (3 & 1 yr old).

Has anyone got any tips on stuff we might need for the Jayco or for travelling in general?

Thanks
Tass

Baby panadol in case they get sick (Give dose by child weight not by age). I found it reduces temperatures and lots of panadol for yourselves . Have a soft toy or something that the baby likes to hold in the car while travelling(trial and error) . For the three year old a good quality comfortable booster seat and for the one year old a baby capsule that tilts down a bit so that you can lay them down a little bit . Stop lots because kids get numb bums as well . cheers

meant baby seat not capsule . I forgot to add that we made a sheepskin pad that fits over the seat belt button on the baby seat because our child was forever undoing the bloody thing . Wot i meant by the baby seat tilting down is that you can get them that the bottom slides forwards to give a more horizontal position so they can sleep in the seat while you are travelling . I have heard of horror stories of parents giving kids fenergon etc to put them to sleep on trips . This is child abuse and i dont agree with it one little bit .

Thanks for that. We've got a pretty well stocked first aid kit for both the kids & us (hubby is an Outdoor Edn teacher so is used to this sort of travel thankfully).
Know what you mean by the seat tilting back - very handy. And agree, fenergon is a no go!

Hi Tass,
A zip-up fly-proofed gazebo with a vinyl floor, where you can scatter their favourite toys, will help keep them happy and free of bities (or even dingoes) when you've set up camp and will help stop you wondering if they've wandered off.

We've got a KinderKot - it's for both inside & outside. Wasn't keen to use it outside because it is her bed for sleeping inside but to save on space I reckon we'll use it. It zips up - the only problem is she can't stand up in it but better than nothing!
Thanks

we travel with a 2 1/2 yr old. 3 things on top of my list are ;

1. DVD player strapped to the back of front seat headrest for the the 3 yr old and let the wiggles take control. best 200 bucks we ever spent!
2. Head lamp for playing spot light with animals at night.
3. Thermals, the little buggers get cold at night.

Got all 3! Wasn't keen on the DVD player to start with but I reckon it's going to save our lives...

We used to swap seats on long trips so that one of the parents can spend some quality time in the back with one of the children. One on one they would really appreciate it and be pretty contented for quite a while after.
We would play games, have puppet shows etc....

Enjoy it, don't treat it like hard time in prison.
Giving them your time can really make a difference to the enjoyment of the whole trip.

Cheers

oh and plenty of breaks, during the day don't try and do too much distance.

I am watching this carefully. I will be travelling with a 3 yr old and 6month soon.
I thought the DVD would be a great idea.
I think just relaxing and take as many breaks as needed for them to be happy. Might only do 200-300km a day...
Have a great trip

Well we'll keep you posted! Our plan is to do a few long days but mostly we have 3+ days in each spot to relax, enjoy, sightsee, etc. We know our kids don't like long trips already so will have to take it day by day.
I think the most important thing will be to be completely flexible and not stress if we don't make it to our destination some days!
Good luck.

Our kids started travelling with us when they were little. As long as they had enough space to get away from each other in the car they were fine. They never turned out to be "are we there yet" types. Did several trips across the Nullarbor with them with virtually no problems. They love camping now (big kids now) and love it when the oldies come with them. It made us great mates with our kids ..main thing will be, making sure mum & Dad get time to enjoy the trip. Look after each other and you'll have a ball.

we travelled 2 yrs ago, Kasey 3 and Amy 1.

as for the kids...we travelled 2 days, stopped for 1...mind you this was a 6wks trip not 6 months trip....

give the kids "days off" from the car.....we let them do almost anything in the car at times to keep them entertained....Kaseys window was coated in stickers (we didnt know she had done it until that arvo! when we got out....)

i packed a lunch box each with goodies in them everyday for them...anything that was car friendly...

other than that...the camera and a diary of all the days events!

have a good trip!!

When no body is around I sing, they love it. We use to have a jolly jumper that we hung on a tree next to camper (that's if you have a tree). The oldies love it they pass by and have a chat to the baby enjoying the bounce. We also had a pop up play thingy that kept the flies out, in Darwin we put a cup of water in it and our little fella loved tipping it over and getting wet. it was washable to get rid of the dribble. Portable cot/ outside play pen was our most used item, Until they learn how to climb out that is. We have travelled around the place with three kids and since they were 3 months old. Tonka Dump trucks for the walkers boy or girl. The eldest is 9 now.
Now they understand things and enjoy the history lessons as we travel these days. The biggest thing we learned was to make sure the darlings are happy before you start setting up other wise the temper tantrums start and im not talking about the children. We also kept the bare necessities. Too much stuff hanging around is more work.
I feel sorry for kids that don't get a chance to travel its good for them.
Have a great time.

Hi Tass,

Some good suggestions so far. Gerry is on the money with the suggestion for an insect proof play area (gazebo). DVD player? Personal choice I suppose, we managed with two small children without one for 6 months, but you will always get discussion on here about that.

Only other thing I would add is window socks for the rear, the afternoon sun can get pretty nasty for little ones in the back and surprising how quickly they can burn.

Great family times ahead for you all, enjoy it.

Matt.
