Hi all
am pulling hair out trying to get a reasonbly clear reception on my Barrett 950 w/auto tune. Have earthed everythng that I can possibly think of and have also fitted fitted an inline noise filter to cut out injector pulse noise (that did cut out a bit of noise) but am stuck with a very noisy radio that I have to have so loud to try to make out any words at all. The noise is there whether engine is running or off so it may even be the radio but any suggestions may be of help. Thanks in anticipation

Hi

You probably are aware of this allready, in the Nissan Manual, it states
that when installing a C B or H F Radio, keep the Antenna Wire,as far
away as possible from the Electronic Control Unit, also keep it away from any Wiring Harness ect.

Cheers

Thats to do with radio transmitters causing interferance to the Nissan electronics not the other way round.

On the early Nissan 300ZX with the electronic dash you could make the dash display for revs and speed go up and down with some garage door remotes.

On our Hilux if we hit the tune button on our HF radio when idleing the engine revs will flutter...our antenna is mounted on the rear of the vehicle and all cables are about 3 foot away from the factory wiring.

Hi ,if you switch the engine off ,than this is not a common rail solenoids interference,is it ,must be something else, make sense?

Adamski is quite correct. If the engine is not turned on, and it's still there, then it's an accessory. Battery conditioners and rust stop electronic prevention systems have been known to do this, as have unmodified Waeco fridges.

A friend had exactly the same problem - ended up being his PDA.
With another friend, it was his Megapulse.

My Barrett picks up a little noise from the Engel fridge, and a heap of noise from any fluoro.

Most HF owners don't expect clear comms while mobile in today's more sophisticated vehicles (but it certainly does happen at times, when incomings are stronger) - once you have stopped and turned everything off though, all should be fine (I too use the Barrett 950). You should expect clear workable comms, at low volume. You are in WA - Perth ? .....anywhere near Barrett's head office ? If you don't have much hair left to pull......this bloke provided first rate service on a minor repair for me recently................

I've been installing and running a Barrett for 20 odd years in quite a few different vehicles. These days if we get a selcall while driving we have a procedure to pull over and switch everything off.
Everything electrical in the vehicle WILL cause some noise.
Typical when the engine is running are oil senders, alternators, electronic injectors, ECU's, wiper motor, a/c fan, thermo/radiator fans, etc etc.
Other accessories which cause interference are UHF CB's, GPS's, Stereo, portable fridges, fluoro lights (normal tube and CFL's), battery chargers, laptop's, DVD players, Satellite TV receivers, basically anything that has an electronic chip/CPU in it is a source of noise.
When you say you have earthed/grounded everything did you do each individual door, bonnet and the exhaust at the front, middle and rear. If the HF antenna is mounted on a bullbar or spare tyre bracket remove paint to make good earth connections seperate to power cables.
Run antenna and control(remote head) cables away from any other wiring by at least 300mm. I sometimes run cables under the carpet/mat beside the trans tunnel to get them away from everything else.
Make sure the transmitter is seperately grounded using the ground terminal at the rear of the case apart from the power.

Hi guys
Thanks for all of your info, as i said i did have injector impulse noise whilst engine was running and that noise was cut out with the filter fitted, however the main interference is still there whether engine running or not. I have also relocated cableing away from most of the electrics and have run new 6mm power cable totally away from aerial cable. I do usually pull over when I do want to communicate and try to do so in a area with reasonable comms. I have scrapped paint off etc to get good earthing so I am tending to think that it may be the radio, although as I said previously I did have an old Codan 7727 with manual antenna and at this stage not really familiar with the Barrett or autotune antenna. I will earth exhaust. At the moment I am in Darwin so will have to check yellow pages. Thanks again

I have no experience or real knowledge in this field except mounting a UHF in my own vehicle but was just wondering and you probably wont understand what Im trying to say LOL BUT here goes. I have noticed on alot of my electrical stuff at home, camera charger, leads that run from camera to computer/tv, video camera they have like this little thing around them closest to the end of the cord its about the same diameter as a packet of life savers and about half the length and the cord goes through it then wraps around and back through it again with the plugs at either end, maybe this is what you are refering to when you say filter ?? Thats an RF choke Steve - it can reduce interference carried by the lead in which its inserted.

There are types that work better at HF or UHF.

They available from stores like Jaycar and Dicksmith in versions that also open up to fit over the wires.

Not a panacea any usually you have to use filters on every lead out of a device that emits noise.

there has been a lot of hf interference lately from foreign transmissions and buzzing and popping and wizzing noises. youre not the only one who has been having trouble with interference i think. makes me wanna get a sat phone........

Hi Carree

Had a similar problem when I recently fitted a Codan NGT to my vehicle. Tech immediately identified it as the electronic rust proofing. Solution as advised by him was to install an on/off switch for the rustproofing on the dash, so that when I use the radio I switch the rustproofing off but leave it on the rest of the time. This worked perfectly. No interference at all on the radio when the rustproofing is turned off.

Hi guys once again thanks for your input, I think that I have found the problem. I went to turn off the remote head and heard a slight change in the tone so gave it a slight tap and all hell broke loose, going really loud and unable to adjust volume, and then again with slight push and pulling could adjust and reduce noise to a certain level so hopefully off to the dr this week or at least before I head home . If anyone can recommend some where in DARWIN it would be of help. Take care

Hi Guys back again
Took my radio into Combined Communication Solutions in Darwin today (23rd June) , they tested and confirmed the Vol/ON/Off switch is faulty. This can be a problem apparently with an older or well used 950 Barrett according to other sources. Hope to back on the air late this week.
Take Care
