Hi All, We have just purchased a Jayco Westport caravan 2002 model and I thought I would
check the brakes before we head off for our holidays. The brake controller is ok but on checking the wheels only one wheel brakes. All the wiring seems ok and measures through, there is a slight hum from the wheel that doesn't brake but it does not engage the magnet even with the controller set to maximum. Is there any way to
check if the electromagnet is burnt out? I have measured it through and it seem ok.
Thanks

Hi
grey nomads,
continuity
check with an ohms meter will tell you if the circuit is OK.
Check the good side and see if the bad side reads the same.
Repco carry parts for electric brake units if you have to buy replacement bits.
Regards,
Bruce.

In the interests of road safety, yours and others, please get it checked by a brake specialist.

Please do not presume that we are not interested in road safety. As if we did not care then we would have just hooked the van on and driven off. That is the reason that we ALWAYS
check everything before we set off.

Reminds me of the story about the guy who had his electric brake system intalled by "professionals". who didnt check wiring properly.
picked up the van and departed immediatly for holiday. After several days, they finally found the fault as to why brakes seemed ineffective and car shuddered around LH corners.
Brake operating from LH indicator wire OFF ON OFF ON LOL

Yes that's what worries me taking it to the "professionals"
unfortunately I have exhausted all ideas and still have not found the problem. It all seems to be wired ok but the full 12v does not get to both wheels. Anyway it is off to the professionals tomorrow I only hope they find the problem. Hoping to go away soon.

You asked if there is a test for the magnets, the answer is yes - power it up, put a steel screwdriver against it. If it sticks, its working.
On the offending wheel, how does the magnet look (all 4 wear holes should be visible)? When power is applied, does a steel spanner stick to the magnet? Is the drum magnet surface clean and flat? Is the magnet mount in good condition (not worn)? Are the wires inside the drum in good condition (not rubbing bare and earthing)? Are all connections soldered? Is the earth return to the plug AND the frame? Does the main loom split in the middle of the van and not on one side? Are the shoes adjusted correctly?
These are the main problems we find everyday. Wornout magnets are (by far) the main culprits.
If you have doubts, post a pic with the drum off.

Thanks, yes we tried all that with the spanner and it all worked. We checked all other things you mentioned and still could not find the problem. So yesterday we had it checked out at the auto electricians and they found it was the controller. Anyway we have a new controller fitted and all is now working correctly.
