It varies a lot - it is pretty rough generally, but approached slowly is fine. I'm not sure if there's been rain - presumably you'd want to call Arkaringa Station and ask them if the
Oodnadatta track was closed.

Its a
well maintained gravel road - not a track as such - sees a lot of traffic - though stony in
places it was fine 2 years back.

It was like a freeway this time last year, smoother than the bitumen for most of it's length.

I was there in October '07. the track was rocky in patches, but generally OK. Was driving a loaded Prado with no trailer. Twasn't a freeway though. The road from
Coober Pedy to
Painted Desert and to
Oodnadatta was better and faster. We stayed overnight at Cadney, not a bad place to stop.
Cheers

Approx 90 Km from
Cadney Park,
Road was really good, but that can vary.
Camping at Arkaringa Station is the go, managers are great.

Freeway, hardly. It is a reasonable quality gravel track for the most part. Be careful of creeks if there has been rain as there are a few to cross. Most of the time they're dry sand.
You need to keep alert as things can change quickly and you may have to slow down as the road does narrow in some parts to a pair of
well worn rutted wheel tracks.
We successfully towed a caravan through there without too many dramas from Cadney to
Oodnadatta.
