Morning All
I have a GU 2.8 lt DX Patrol, and the navigator does not like the resonance/noise of the motor. She said it is not the volume but the pitch that is annoying.I fitted a solid flywheel a while ago but I did not think it made that much difference noise wise.It does not bother me as I have Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) anyway.I know its a diesel and they are loud but other vehicles dont seem to be as bad ! any thoughts, besides ear muffs.

Cheers

Can the navagator pin point where the increased noise is coming from ?
Maybe you could add a coupla extra thicknesses of insulation to the front floor area and also the firewall.

How long before someone tells you to turn the radiop up a bit ?
I guess there's no volume control on the new flywheel? (sorry)

Glenn,

We have a '98 2.8 ST and find it very quiet. Quieter than any of the 4 cyl versions I've driven. I wonder what condition your engine mounts and exhaust mounts are in. Sounds almost as though you have something touching the chassis or body.

Turbo was getting pretty whiney, in fact we could be travelling on the open road and hit a bit of a bump which would change the noise of the turbo completely. The whistle of the huffer would alter to more like a high pitched chatter which I could hear with "T" ears as well. A recent turbo overhaul has sorted this problem out.

Good luck sorting it out,

must be something up, I have the 2.8 st as well and it is quieter than 3lt ones.

Maybe the DX has less sound proofing than the ST???

Is the matting on the underside of the bonnet in good cond??

Good luck

Stefan

We recently had a test drive, with DX and a ST, and found the DX
noisy due to the Rubber Floor Mats, we noticed the difference with
the Carpeted Floor in the ST model, it was a lot quiter.

Thanks for the replies,I have found that the exhaust pipe is loose at the manifold/dump pipe section.will fix this and see how we go.spoke to a mechanic mate who dropped this morn and he said he had a camry years ago and everyone who travelled in the car for any distance got sick.turned out to be a the exhaust system,he had it replaced and fixed the problem.I may use this as an excuse to get a new Beaudesert Exhaust !

Do you have a snorkel ? And is it on the passenger side ? I know a Hi-Lux that has severe resonance coming from the snorkel.

Kiwi,

6cyl motors don't appear to have the induction noise problems of 4 cyl motors, especially with a turbo in the circuit, but you're right about the snorkel up the pillar.
