Can anybody report on current road conditions between
Laverton and
Yulara for 4WD + off-road van? Also permits - are they required for travel on the public road and roadhouse stops?

The road comments on the link are a bit dated. I hoped to hear from somebody who could comment specifically on what the roads are like right now for towing a van across.
I'm also asking if permits are really needed for the public road - I understand that the new government has yet to revert to the old permit system and I'd rather not wait two weeks for a permit to turn up if nobody is going to want to see it.

Travelled the Great Central about 10 days ago, with a landcruiser towing an off-road Kedron, no problems driving about 75-80km/hr. Quite dusty and a bit of sand and bulldust holes on
Yulara side of Docker River. Didn't stay at either
Warburton or Docker River on recommendation of other travellers. We got our permit from Dept of Indigenous Affairs by Fax without any trouble and were not asked by anyone to see it at any time.

We are going that way shortly and we were planning on staying overnight at
Warburton, as it is roughly 1/2 way between
Laverton and The Olgas. I have read that
Warburton isn't the nicest place around.
Do you have any suggestion on an alternative or any other
good camp spots along the GCR?
I applied for a permit yesterday, from the DIAs website. Got the permit, via email, this morning. Very efficient...
Cheers

We spent the first night at a roadstop
camp with fellow travellers, and the second night at Warakurna (Giles). However the Roadhouse at Tjukayrila looked OK when we fueled up on the 1st day. We did the early tour of Giles Met Station and watched them release the ballon, found it interesting if you have the time.

Thanks for the responses. Sounds like a goer, and we'll opt for permits.
