Third Party Insurance insures the vehicle (or property) you hit!!
It covers the damage to (say) when you hit a Rolls Royce- but does not cover the damage to your own vehicle.
Full coverage is 'comprehensive'.. covers your vehicle & the other vehicle (or property) if you are the at fault driver...

Compulsory Third Party - it covers the person in the vehicle that is injured. You can't be on the road without this rego, you pay it automatically with your rego renewal probably without noticing.

Third Party is insurance you pay for when you hit a Rolls Royce so the insurer pays for the damage to the other party, but not yours.

Eg:

Whenever one of my vehicles falls below a certain value I drop the expensive Compulsory insurance and get the third party, usually sold with or without fire and theft insurance. My Prado went from a comprehensive bill of $650 a year to a third party property insurance bill of about $124 a year. This does not cover damage to my vehicle, just the vehicle you hit.

If someone hits you then you have to sue them to get your repairs.

Hope that makes sense. Don't be confused by the "third" in third party, it only means "someone else not you".

After you factor in the saving you make each year from having third party and not comprehensive, after a few years the saving of the excess can often cover the cost of a small accident.

Laura,
In summary- what John says below..
When you register your vehicle- you gotta have a 'pink' (roadworthy) slip and a 'green' (CTP) slip.
Strange but- most of them these days are white...??
Is it the vehicle or trailer you're enquiring about??

Look at your NSW vehicle registration details and the amounts listed on the paperwork.
It should have the CTP listed which as said is compulsory, in Vic its called the TAC charge.

The other two insurances are ones you need to arrange (Depending on your needs, affordability and if any finance is in place on the vehicle) with an outside insurance company, AAMI, RACV, or whoever as examples.
This will ensure you are covered if you either hit someone else and need to pay for their damage (Third Party or Third Party Fire & Theft)
Comprehensive will cover your damage as well as theirs.

Hope this helps??

Laura thats interesting, so I take it that in NSW CTP has to be arranged with an independent insurer and not a State Gov owned insurance company??

In Vic the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) is a owned and operated by the State Government.

Yes John- it was de-regulated a while back. Used to all be thru GIO (Government Insurance Office)- but now it's open slather. And boy, can the rates vary if you do a ring around!!!
Even with the same 'insurer'- rates can vary thru different 'agents'...

CTP = Compulsory Third Party Insurance (I think??) which should form part of your vehicle registration, In Victoria its now called the TAC charge (Transport Accident Insurance)

Third Party is as Signy has said, covers the other persons property if you are liable.
Comprehensive Insurance covers your loss (Vehicle) as well as damage to the other party.
Both of these insurances are optional (Although you would have to have rocks in your head if you didn't protect your interests)

If your vehicle is under finance you are almost always required by the financier to insure the vehicle which mean comprehensive insurance or you may be in breach of your terms of finance.

Hi John,
Just a side note..
The examples here are if ya happen to hit a Rolls Royce...
Should be..."if ya happen to collide with a Troopy" .. for a start you'd come out second best..

I think CTP is insurance that protects you against being sued for the injuries that may be inflicted against someone you injure in a car accident, eg broken leg.
In NSW you can not register a vehicle without paying the CTP.
Third party insurance is insurance protecting you from having to pay for the damage to another vehicle, eg smashing into a Rolls Royce.
All null and void though if your drunk or driving an unroadworthy vehicle.
I am sure others will have a better explanation.

Compulsory Third Party is just that, compulsory in all States. Some States it is intergrated with the registration fee/process. In other (backward) states you have to organise it seperately. Guess they'll cath up with the rest of Australia one day.

COMPULSORY THIRD PARTY

Laura

Having a blond moment or what ?

In Vic we have what is called a "Bomb policy", which is Third Party property,, Its a choice thing
ie when you do not think your vehicle is worth fully insuring, for whatever reason is necessary..and it's a whole lot cheaper. It covers you say " if Lyn was to run up the Rrrrrr's of a Roller, he gets his vehicle fixed, from our insurance, but the little Astra, would be paid for out of our own pocket.

CPT is what it says "Compulsory", and you cannot get "rego" without it...... It covers people...
Apparently it's had a name change, according to one of oour learned friends, but its still the same..... It covers hurt people, and their recovery.

Hope that doesn't confuse things any more !

Cheers Mate
Bucky
