Boc

Have been in WA now for 2 years, but used to live in Brightwaters, about 15 minutes from the Watagans. As far as I can recall pretty much every camp site in the Watagans is accessible by 2 wheel drive vehicle, so you should have no issues in getting your jayco into any of them I wouldn't think.

As I am at work at the moment I don't have my camping info with me, but if someone hasn't posted any locations for you by tonight I will dig some up and post them for you.

Cheers

All of the camping areas are 2wd access, for that reason don't go camping by yourself as the ferals abound and take great delight in carving up campsites on motor bikes when drunk.
Unfortunately there is only safety in numbers and while it won't stop the loud music and other antisocial behaviour weight of numbers may keep them away from your campsite.
As Richard has said you are only 30 mins max from civilisation.
Our local 4wd club tends not to camp out there anymore because of the problem.

Thanks peter and Richard for quick replies --

Peter - so you suggest i maybe give the watagans a miss with the misses and kids and maybe just head up to Barrington tops ?

Would the watagans be better suited to a boys weekend and 4x4 rather than with the financial adviser funding liabilities ?

Whoops! Made a blue there, sorry. Can't help you with that area, but we will watch with interest because it is an area my wife & I intend to check out in the near future.
Dunno whether or not it is of any interest to you, but we recently "found" a spot up in the Tea Gardens/ Hawks Nest area that we like.
If travelling through Tea Gardens from Pacific Hwy & after crossing the bridge going towards Hawkes Nest, make a Left turn at the T intersection onto Mungo Brush Road. About three Klicks down there is a turnoff leading into a camp area. Cant think of the name, & SHMBI is not home, so not able to tell you.
It is a prominent entry area with large sign. Bit of a rough track in, but still sedan territory.
It's a privately owned area, well grassed with both good open as well as shaded areas. Van/camp sites are not marked (might be in peak times) but park where you want to & take up as much room as you want. There is no power, plenty of fresh water ( tank) it is right on the Myall river & has a little sandy beach. It also has long drop toilets which are clean, well maintained & do not stink. it also has a dump point. You can have a camp fire, a great place as well for kids but I am not sure about dogs. There is an onsite caretaker who is a great bloke & comes around in the evening ( there doesn't seem to be a booking in procedure) & collects a $15 per night camp fee. We love it, its a great spot with lots of regulars. Cheers

Camped at the watagans some time ago. Agreed it is close to civilisation but echo the ferals problem. Take the time to do the Barringtons. Dog/river/kids SWMBO sounds like a good mix. If you are taking everyone away try Riverwood Downs

Ok, Ok I know it is not wilderness (in fact far from it) but I have camped there many times, on the river well away from the other humans etc. They are VERY dog friendly. Dogs are generally a problem in state forests or national parks.

Link is Riverwood Downs

Enjoy.

Howdy Craig, can you tell us what they charge? I visited there many years ago as a young bloke.
We live in Newcastle and are looking for places not to distant from home where we can spend a few days with our van without having to spend heaps. Our van is self sufficient & we are just looking for a few choices of places close to home. Thanks & cheers

I camp at the Watagans a fair bit with my dog, true the ferals can be a pain sometimes but i would not be put off by it,have not seen any problem dogs at the camp sites but did see some wild dogs years ago.Have camped at Riverwood Downs on the Karuah River and would highly reccommend it for campers with dogs, another good spot is Chitchester State Forest, Telegherey river[creek]camp area. These campsites are a bit further away than the Watagans if you wanted a quick trip.
If there is safety in numbers and plenty of happy campers with happy dogs maybe there should be a weekend at the Watagans?????

I know a very secluded camp spot in the Watagans not far from the Pines that is usually empty (but the SCouts had discovered it last time I was there). No river there, but a gorgeous spot. From memory you head back towards the coast from The PInes and take the first track on the left (less than 1km from the PInes). Track is very short, gets a bit narrow between trees but camper should be ok..you arrive at an area with dense tall trees that aren't too big in trunk diameter, enough room to camp in between. Zero facilities. Last time I was there, fireflies came out - magic stuff...

The Basin campsite always looks inviting, haven't seen too much evidence of ferals..

Gloucester River camping ground is excellent, its on the way to Gloucester Tops..

Barrington tops might have a few issues with snow this time of year..

Cheers
